RC Crawling

  • Hi mate. On top of whatever @Ifonlyiwerebelgian recommends, there is also this fella on YouTube who reviews a lot of cheap/entry level RC, including crawlers: https://www.youtube.com/@TomleyRC/videos

  • It's an FTX Outback Fury.

I've got a FMS FCX24m for my eldest - the Discovery variant. It's pretty good out of the box, just needed a bit of weight adding to the wheels to keep it planted on steeper / rootier climbs. We use it mostly indoors but also good enough to take out and about with the two speed transmission.

  • I have seen his stuff before but there is so much choice ha.

  • Nice one cheers

  • It is indeed an FTX Fury. I also have an FTX tracker. Pretty happy with the FTX brand and my local hobby shop can get the parts really easily.

I went down the cheap route and got burned. I had an MN99, the plastic gears lasted a few weeks before going to mush. Same brand as WPL I believe.

Having said that, I am tempted by the new mn168 as the spec looks a lot better.

I reckon the New FMS camel trophies are a good shout. I've got the k5 blazer and it's great. It's also a sensible size for a child at 1/24th scale .

My 4 year old is sensible enough with my big car so I've taken the risk on buying him the fury. I suspect my ankles are going to get hit fairly often though.

  • There is. A lot of it is much of a muchness, tbh, at a given price point.

So if your budget is - say - £150, I don't think it matters a great deal what you land on.

  • I'm also fairly new to this whole world. But loving it.

It so much cheaper than bikes!

  • If FMS do a 1/10 or 1/8 camel trophy I will 100% buy one

  • This guys vids are generally good.

Also, for kids the small radios you get with the 1/24 cars are perfect

  • Excellent morning. 5k 'run' with the car around burrington combe. Plus, 20 mile round trip on the bike to get to there.

Wanted to be able to drive one handed so knocked up a thumb steer attatchment and printed it last night. Worked flawlessly, but I think I'm going to design one with a pivot point and a bearing.

Trails were sodden! I now need to clean and dry the car off.. I suspect some bearings might not survive. It was mostly submerged a couple of times today.

  • Strong work!

Making me want to get one, plenty of good trails to be found locally. Goblin coombe in Cleeve should be good and a tad closer than burrington

  • I rode up Cleeve on the way. I live in nailsea and wanted to get a few miles on the bike as well as playing with the car.

I shall explore the Cleeve woods soon. It's close enough for night driving.

  • Ordered this last night. It's a beastly 1/8 scale.

  • That’s a beast!

I’ve started restoring an old touring car chassis - right down to the last nuts and bolts. It’ll probably need new shocks; they’re pitted.

  • Lots of fiddly work there.

I'm tempted to do my first kit build. Just so i get to learn how everything works.

  • On another note. Does the battery 'C' rating matter for crawler/trail trucks?

I'm finally making the move to lipo. Trying figure out what the best battery option is.

  • You should defo build a kit. Or dismantle one of your RTRs and put it back together - a service never hurts, it’s fun, and you’ll learn how it all works.

I use NIMH batteries so I’m not an expert, but I think the C rating in a lipo battery is less important for crawling as I doubt the motor you’re using is ever demanding a high current delivery. Eg a typical brushed crawling motor will be high turn and therefore low current.

You need a high C rating, if you have like a 5000kv brushless motor and you’re hooning something round a car park at 60kph with mad accelerations.

    Is my understanding!

  • Spotted this at Rouleur Live. Cheap and cheerful. I guess it's the newer one as the axles look nicer than the one that we had.

  • Off topic but does anyone know if there are any RC glider / airplane people on the forum? I have inherited a bunch of wings and electronics and things that I want to give away.

  • I think @Ordinata and @Howard have planes?

  • Thanks I’ll send them a message

  • Clearly a BBX rather than a crawler 😉, but is pretty cool!

  • Really cool, thanks for sharing!
