  • I'm planning on running stems through it and multi-tracking back into Live. I've had a mess around and it sounds so nice with a couple of pedals on the effect sends.

I need to sell some gear to offset the cost though! 😬

  • Any tips on how to use repetition effectively to build and sustain energy? How is this done without it sounding boring?

  • In an arrangement?

  • Are you in Ableton?

  • Well not yet…. I’m using hardware and I’m looking at DAWs now and planning ahead (Ableton is the front runner)

  • For hardware things like opening up a filter, increasing the decay of a voice, using spatial FX like reverb and delay will all add energy. As well as dropping out elements over time and doing any or all of the above to a main voice/motif.

In general arrangement terms in a DAW I like to steal arrangements from a track in the same genre I like. Drag the wav in and use markers to mark out everything, hats come in, ride comes in, break, kick drop, main break.... that kind of thing.

Even though you're stealing an arrangement it will never be the same.

Mike Monday has a useful chart here:

    Thanks for this.

  • anyone succumbed to the hype yet and bought a roland p-6 sampler?
looks like quite a fun toy

  • Nope, but it does look very cool. I bought a Volca Sample 2 maybe 2 years back and it looks to be everything I wanted that to be.

  • And also using odd bars/measures works well to break up 'loopitis'. A kick drop or anything else really sounds great when it doesn't just happen on the end of the bar

  • My Genelec 8020c are getting a bit long in the tooth and I'm after something else very flat for mixing.

I'm in a small room so 7" woofers are a bit too much so I'm looking at 5" (think my Genelec are 4").

I know it can be super personal, but before I pull the trigger on some Focal Shape 50's, is there anything else I should consider?

  • I have Focal Twin 6be on the production side, and Solo 6be on the DJ side...I love them! I actually recommended the Alpha EVO to a friend the other day too. I know they're all slightly different, but I have a feeling the Shapes will sound great too.

  • Ah nice. Yeah the Twins look amazing!

  • Maybe not that helpful but I added a sub to some 5" PMC and it stopped me looking for anything else for nearly 10 years.

  • Yeah I've been toying with the idea of adding a sub to my Genelec. Food for thought definitely

  • Couple of recent gig setups

  • Looks wicked

  • Cheers! We're getting way better at setting up without spending another 20 mins trying to figure out why something isn't getting synced! 😂

  • It does seem ambitious to say the least 😂

  • Wow, how long does it take you to set up? I'm sure all that spaghetti makes it look worse than it is but it's still giving me an anxiety attack!

  • Our cases are pretty much setup, just CV and Gate inputs from external sequencers, MIDI between us, and audio inputs on the mixer, then audio out from the mixer into our end of chain compression/distortion, then out to house via DI. We've got it down to about 10 minutes.

  • 10 minutes? Impressive!

  • I was already lost at CV and GATE 😂
