What is the model of your modem and what you call wireless routers? Trying to work out what's actually routing.
-
• #2203
Don't do it.
Plug one of the routers into the modem, maybe the Linksys seeing as it is part of a mesh network.
Turn everything off, plug the Linksys into the modem, forget Google for the minute.
Turn it all on, verify it works.l

Can anyone advise on how to extend my WiFi coverage into the garden?
We have an Eero gateway plugged into the router in the hallway, which gives decent coverage for the the whole house. Then an Eero extender in the BBQ hut (15m from the back wall and just over 20m away from the gateway) which gets a medium signal, not very strong but it works.
I tried putting another extender in the barn which is another 20m from the first extender (40ish metres from the gateway) but that didn't work. I seem to recall reading that Eero networks have a limit of 100ft from the gateway... -

What's the forum approved speed checker? As I understand it since ISPs prioritise traffic to certain ones to skew the results. Anyway, would preferably be able to schedule a test every 15 mins for instance and look at the results at the end of the day.

What are you trying to measure? Last mile? Path to some destination that is important to you including peering links along the way?
Any 3rd party speed checker might change the other end so if you want to start to control for variables then spin up iperf3 on a VM somewhere relevant and test to that.

Did I ask this? Does anyone want an Asus RT-N66U?

Eeerm I don't know. Just whether I'm getting the theoretical half gig that I pay BT for to the router, whatever that's called. The guy on the phone said the router is getting some number arrive that, I think the TV box needed a factory reset which has been my major gripe (TV buffering, cutting out etc) it's not hard wired yet but in the room next door to the router with only a thin wall and about 5m of air in-between.

I've just got my new BT router from them for renewing my contract. It's (presumably) better than my old one, which was probably 8-10 years old, but it doesn't have a guest wifi network on it anymore. I used to put the TVs, Roku etc on the guest to try to stop them sniffing around too much.
Anyone know if there's a bit of kit I can plug in to provide a guest network without too much faff, or am I stuck with it unless I replace the router (and then the disks I guess)?

You only pay for that to the nearest BT node. You don't get half a gig to Antarctica and a whole load of other destinations.
BT GPON? Can you get stats from the physical line? Perhaps not with a BT supplied router?

It depends a bit what you want the guest WiFi network to do. If you want it isolated from your local network so guest can't get to your other devices then you can't do that without lots of faff. I'd put the BT router in a box and get something sensible.

I guess that's what I'm after - thanks, I'll think about whether I can be bothered to go down this route!

So I'm with community fibre with the MX5600, but can't quite cover the whole house.
Anyone know if this is compatible to add as a node?

I've got a load of mx4200s, flashed with retail firmware. I added an mx5500 (I think) which has CF firmware, and I get occasional dropouts since adding it, so I think that's down to the new CF firmware unit.
It should work, but I think you will need the CF router to be the master, or the other way round. I can't remember exactly (head like a sieve)

ah, didn't realise they could be locked like that, might call them up tomorrow though I assume they'll just try and get me to purchase their full-house coverage package rather than help me do it myself for cheap
-
• #2216
I've bought an OTP node (although specifically a child unit) that connected just fine to the CF parent

Can the MX5500 be flashed with retail firmware?
-
• #2218
I don't think so - I've not found a way of doing it. The MX4200 is a better unit, I think, tri-band vs dual band, with one of the 5ghz radios dedicated for wireless backhaul.
I am toying with the idea of replacing my 5500 with another 4200, but it's all money isn't it

What are the odds of this coming from the US rather than a UK warehouse?
I've ordered from Amazon Spain before and had UK deliveries but this time there are power adapters to consider
-
• #2220
99% I'd say.
It says it's a US import and the few times I've ordered those it's always been from the US.
I'd be surprised if it wasn't dual voltage though.

Is there a software setting for UK frequencies?
-
• #2222
It's more that the power adaptor will be us pins rather than the classic UK 3 pin 13A.
Hadn't considered frequencies and licences for different territories.
Good reasons to just discount it.

Our broadband has just been upgraded from 500Mbps to 1Gbps and I'm thinking about upgrading the wifi setup to take advantage of it. We have a few wifi6 devices. There's a drawing of the current setup below. There's no practical way of getting a cable from the front of the house to the back of the house. Two of us WFH so plenty of video calls and design docs being uploaded/downloaded. 25m garden and 120sq.m house.
CEX sell Eero Pro 6 and Eero Pro 6E for as low as £40-60 a unit so I'm considering just buying those - understanding I might have to find three not locked to an ISP. Is there better way of doing it for similar cash?

Are they just WiFi points or routers too?
If the latter then two routers on the network will cause it to fail at some point
