  • The m846 might be an old whittling knife?

  • There's a huntin', fishin' and shootin' shop in Eton High Street which is a Victorinox dealer. I'll see if they'll do the same forms.

  • Just try get it properly to Victorinox in Switzerland, as most of the annoying stories online have been from people sending via the postal liaison place.

  • Yes very possible, has that shape. I’m sure it will prune the veg plants in the garden too though.

  • I'd work the flat bit at the end into its own profile so it's sharp along the front/leading edge. Did similar in a broken multi tool and it's way more useful than the original shape

  • I've given it a little tickle on the stone while at work (doing fuck all) this evening. So it is usable just not purty. I can live with it.

  • Curve it a bit more and I bet you forget to ever get it ‘fixed’.

  • My Ryky Tran is off to its new home somewhere south of the river.

It's taken me a long time to work out what I like in knives, but I think i'm there now.

  • Freshly sharpened is a real blessing. SG2, surprisingly easy to get a burr and hold an edge for a long time.

  • I used to have m846 (not that actual one). It was sold in the uk by Military Mart, as a Mora knife. It was a great knife, kept its sharpness for ages. It was the best steak knife I ever had.

  • All the Mora posts online appear to say the same.

I felt a little disheartened yesterday that I might have got auction-fever. The jacknife (two part, marlin + blade) doesn’t show any Sheffield maker marks anywhere, and that was the lions share of the final bid value to me. On reflection I think I did well if I can use a couple of these in the kitchen.

Maybe if someone bought one of the hunting knives I’d feel like I got the good end of the deal. Might offer up photos on the airgun forum as they are much more into these types of things.

  • I'd suggest trying the bushcraft people first. You could offer the jacknife there as well if you aren't happy with it. I really liked the Mora, but I had too many knives. I gave it to a friend who runs a forest school

  • Mora knives, are a close second favourite knife. Bought a few sandvik knives that look exactly like mora knives.

  • One knife to rule them all....

  • The jack knife was to be a gift for the OH’s dad so fingers crossed he still appreciates it.

  • Shiney, sharp, not so tight he can't undo it - everyone loves a jack knife. I'm sure he will.

  • Does it say on the second knife 'Gilwelle or similar ? - may be interested, thanks M

  • Do you mean the striped-handled Wade & Butcher?

It has the circled B with arrow and iron cross. I think it’s the 1920’s/30’s one like you see referenced under a few names for scouts etc.

  • Has anyone had experience from ordering from Cleancut? I am drawn to the Kamo knives they have so probably going to go for them. Trying to work out what sort of customs fees I’ll have to pay if I order a couple in one go. The total will be over the £135 cut off limit for customs fees but can’t work out from anywhere what extra costs I’ll be looking at.
Think getting them as two separate orders might be cheaper despite the two postage costs, at least that way I’ll only be paying VAT and shouldn’t be any customs fees on top.

  • I gave the blade a gentle hand-polish and it’s very difficult to make out, but I can see an italicised “ell” so I think this may have been a Gillwell engraved knife after all.

  • Back in HK after a trip to Osaka. Picked up up a few bits and pieces. Nothing earth shattering but given weakness of yen + tax free everything is half price pretty much vs UK

  • 20% VAT is the stinger though; customs fees of about 2% are hardly the main problem..

  • The ProCook Nakiri is down to £10 again. I love mine, highly recommended.

  • A new thread possibly needed; knife anti or at best functional. A cleaver allegedly made by a master craftsman and forged from the finest high carbon steel, plus a 12" steel for touching up the edges on my stainless knives. The cleaver is impressively sharp.

The cleaver probably represents what people in China actually use as opposed to the pretty, but fuck off expensive, ones available here. Change out of £20 for the pair off Ali X, inclusive of taxes and postage.

  • Vietnamese custom cleaver. Cost $140 shipped (no tax but lucky I guess). Best cleaver I've used beating my moritaka, sentan, sugimoto, cck etc.
