Pff shit like this is why life is worth living.
Stay up, be tired, have memories. It's better than going to a Steps concert or watching TV

was out at about 9.30 last night and saw a red light through the trees at the end of my sisters garden just thought it was a light at the local industrial estate, about 11pm she texted me to say the northern lights were out so popped out to have another look ... nothing. then about midnight my portable radio started to cut out so thought i might pop out again, saw vivid reds and streaks through the sky. was pretty impressive and the first time i have definitely seen the northern lights. glad to have ticked it off the bucket list.

What are the chances of seeing it tonight? Considering getting to somewhere dark later

Stepped out of front door about 10pm yesterday to go on a aurora hunt armed with multiple social media accounts running to keep up to date with sightings...only to see it above my house!

Still supposed to be good. The CME that triggered it was a very large one and we are currently at the peak of the cycle for aurora apparently. I'm definitely going out l looking for it!

Can anyone explain this comet image on the Guardian? Surely thereās no way it can appear as a dark shadow like this? https://www.theguardian.com/science/2024/oct/11/comet-a3-last-seen-in-neanderthal-times-could-be-sighted-from-uk-this-weekend#img-1

It canāt be right, right? Isnāt it a meteor? I google image searched it and the Guardian is the only one with that image. It also says itās only been sighted in the southern hemisphere but that image says Geneva. Bizarre

It can now be seen in the NH too. No idea if that picture is correct though

That is a vapour trail - the Guardian is turning into facebook. What light do they think might be behind the ācometā? And in what sense is it āstreakingā across the sky?

Is there a forum recommended device for taking pictures from the eyepiece of a telecope with an iPhone? Trying to hold the phone in position just isn't working.

Went out last Thursday to try and get a wide field shot of Pleiades and the California Nebula, was rudely interrupted by the aurora. Totally ruined the hundreds of tracked shots I took, but was tres pretty and left me with this after a bit of stacking.
