Audiophiles hifi appreciation thread old and new

Fair, I’m not going down the route of a bunch of room treatment but I probably should have said it’s going into the converted attic of a 300 y/o timber framed building with jute and underlay over oak boards. There will be a fair bit of echoing off the pitched ceiling but we’ll see how we get on.

From what I have seen the smaller LSX models probably won’t fill the room, which I want really.

I don’t disagree but I’m starting from zero, I hate cables, and I’m happy to write off the ‘smart’ part for a separate device later.

Nobody likes cables, but this is the audiophile thread so we're stuck with them.

My Cambridge Audio CXA81 gave up the ghost last night. Has gone into CAP5 DC protection mode. Factory reset not working. Making awful loud clicks and buzzing noises from inside when switched on, then instantly going into CAP5 mode.

Currently two weeks shy of two years old. Two year warranty. Emailed CA today. Fingers crossed.

Klipsch sevens? They come with a free wiim mini for airplay 2, there is also some kind of dsp in the app but no idea what it does or how, might be useful for tweaking in a tricky space.

They're powered and not active if that's a concern

I'm having to clear through my Dad's old stuff and he has a lot of audio equipment, which I have no idea what to do with. Is any of this stuff worth anything? Is anyone using this type of stuff, is it even worth selling?
It's all working but I remember the amp being a bit crackly.

That's the kind of kit people might be interested in. Biggest difficulty selling it is making sure it's delivered without damage.

My new hifi friend was raving about those.
No idea if they are roughly the same price as the kefs, but I think they are way better looking.

Not sure if you're still looking but I have a Project Debut I'd probably let go.

It's from 2004, rarely used as I've always had 1210s. Manual speed change with the pulley.

Full working order and in very decent shape. I need to locate the PSU, but they're still available. £85 picked up from New Cross?

My 17 year old nephew visited recently and took a real shine to playing some of my records.

He has just messaged asking what would be a good starter record deck. I am not sure of budget at the moment, I am assuming around £200. Any suggestions? Ia there anything with some kind of integrated speaker that has an output that could connect to an amp in the future?

A Bluetooth turntable is probably the way to go. Most are crappy but Pro-Ject do the E1 BT for £350 which would transmit to a BT speaker for now and still be good as and when they upgrade to an amp and speakers. It has built in a phono stage too.

Thanks for the mention, I think he is going to have something like @Stevethecoffee mentioned because he lacks any of the other gear to get it running.

Makes sense - the Pro-Ject needs an amp + phono stage so it's not as plug and play.

Picked up by UPS yesterday.

CA have been very good. Replied pretty quick and once they checked my order number and serial number of the amp, they approved the repair and arranged for it to be collected. Will see what they say once they get it back and open it up.

Fair enough, and if he's got that budget then absolutely why not, but in my experience basic (but serviceable) amps and speakers are really easy to find for buttons on FB/freecycle places, so if he was operating under a tighter financial constraint he could do a lot worse with the above to put a decent system together with....

My nephew showed similar interest a few years ago (hes now 22). I gifted him some of my old equipment to get him up and running. He lost interest pretty quickly after he released that listening to vinyl means you have to actually buy the music you want to listen to.

I think its something that people who have grown up only ever knowing streaming as their sole way of listening to music struggle to comprehend until they go to a record shop and realise vinyl is expensive unless you're willing to put in the footwork digging for bargains, which my nephew was 100% not willing to do.
