  • South London people - who are the best timber people for birch ply sheets? I'm assuming delivery from the online shops will be extortionate as i'm inly looking for x1 sheet...

  • Champion Timber are great but they're not stocking Birch due to the Russia situation as most of it comes from there. They have a good selection of maple faced ply though.

  • Those books are quite useful, use volume 1 but mainly for photography.
Printed in CMYK though so a lot of pigment paint colours are out of gamut.

  • Great, thank you!

  • Im going to stud and lower my ceiling and overboard. The long dimension of one is a tad over 4m. Could I join together a couple of 2400mm 2x3 (sistering them together) to make that span?

  • Why not just get 4.8m 2x3 and cut it to length?

  • Sl hardwood used to do good ply. Birch and hardwood veneers. Been a while since I used them.

  • Where can you buy decent front doors from?

  • If half you bank balance is screaming to run away then you need a joinery and they may need to do the frame too.. going to need to give yourself a few parameters - best start is what matches the age of the property

  • What sorta money is everyone paying for birch ply sheets they have bought.

  • I paid 160 a sheet for 2 x 24mm from Shawfield Timber inc multiple cuts a few months back. It’s a lot, but I built two desks and a set of shelves and have a few bits left over so it went quite far IMO.

  • Any suggestions for a supplier for stripwood and mouldings in South East London / Kent? Champion Timber as recommended a few posts up don't seem to have the size I need.

    I don't think this shape exists premade so I'll need to glue together a rectangle section (28mm x 9mm) and a half dowel (20mm x 10mm).

I feel like I should use hardwood (sapele?) for durability but I'd probably settle for pine if it was significantly more convenient to source.

  • I had to source a similar P shaped profile to remake the skirting for here (added on top of 1x6 pine boards). I got it from B&Q of all places. Might be smaller than what you have but worth a wander round if there's one close. Or Wickes. It will be softwood though.

  • thanks, I'll scoot over to both of those an see what they have.

The tail of the P needs to match the existing as it plugs in to a slot in the frame - the round section isn't so critical.

  • Definitely nothing in builders depot?

  • I keep finding a minimum order of 5 for stuff that long annoyingly. Im going to stud out the walls later and get a proper measurement - maybe my measurements dont line up with real life.

  • Can't you router it to that shape using a 10mm radius bead router bit. then cut the straight edge down to size with a jigsaw =and tidy up with a chisel.

  • How many 2.4m timbers do you need? If it's >=8, just order 5 4.8m lengths and cut 4 in half?

  • I suppose I could, was hoping for an easy option.

  • 30 or so 2400mm are needed, but 4800mm are 4 times the price of 2400mm at the moment. Kinda annoying

  • Where are you buying from? Even on Bradfords [who I avoid as they're more expensive than my friendly local builder's merchants] they're only twice for price @ £8.95.

  • FYI Unifi FINALLY updated the chime firmware, so you can now change the chime tone and upload your own, so until I get the Pro doorbell I have just recorded the 'Ding Dong' of ours, uploaded it and disable the mechanial chime - no more dropouts for us!

  • Where can you buy decent front doors from?

B&Q offer a well-priced selection described as 'Wooden White oak veneer' in standard sizes. They are not available in-store – they are supplied direct by Rohden. This firm describes its timber sources as Brazil and China, which may give you pause for thought.

  • Selco should be around £7 for 4800
They charge exactly twice the price of 2400 iirc
