  • I'm not sure in what way this is mutually exclusive or that anyone would argue it isnt a factor.

I doubt Kennedy would have made it if tv wasn't a factor and he weren't so good looking. His whole image of youth and vitally was a concoction - he was an incredibly sickly person who used meds and makeup to sure up the image

I didn't say they were mutually exclusive, just that I don't think Trump 'genuinely' connects with people (on a large scale) in any way other than the TV bonus he brings with him. Sure, there are other factors--protest voting à la anything but the existing, the anti-social media campaigns for him by often unknown (though suspected) actors, the disruption brought by having an episodically confused man being paraded cruelly in front of the cameras all the time, and so forth. They may even be more significant than Trump's personal appearances. I just don't see how he connects other than how TV connected and established him.

  • Interesting from Robert Reich, who always seems to talk sense. Not particularly heartening though.

  • Oh fuck, it's next month.

Ever since the radge orange bampot entered the fray their interminable election campaigns have been unending torture.

  • Family postal votes have all now arrived. Sadly of little import as they are all registered in California.

  • Is it just me, or is there a lot less noise about this election than 2016/2020?

Or have I just been deemed sufficiently uninterested in it to the point that the Elders of the Internet have declined serving me endless election-based content?

  • Hard to tell. I have been following it because I fear Trump in office for a second time will be worse than the first. As a result US election commentary dominates my online feed.

  • Feels like there's been a lull in the last few weeks? Got loads in my feeds before Biden stepped down, then heaps again on Harris, but now it's gone quiet...

  • I reckon there's a lot less noise somehow.
There's some back and forth squabbling, but it's no longer as if every move from either candidate is treated as an earth shattering event.

  • There's plenty of noise, but war in the Middle East is noisier.

  • A final theory holds that Harris has not yet put to rest voters’ fears about inflation and the economy. But given that the American economy has rebounded, inflation is way down, interest rates are falling, wages are up and the job engine continues, you’d think voters at the margin would be moving toward her rather than toward Trump.

Does this stand up to scrutiny given how shit many Americans feel about economic performance, regardless of the facts?

But yeah lack of name recognition makes sense

  • I agree. I think another commentator said something similar, you could have all the stats and figures in your favour, but until people start to feel a difference it won't matter at all. And people are still a few months (a year?) away from feeling any better off.

  • Inflation has been coming down for months. The economy has been doing well for ages but people either aren't feeling it, the messaging from the Dems has been bad and the GOP have cut through with their doom and gloom about it.

  • It's debatable how many citizens of any democracy actually like democracy, but I think it's a fair bet that most Trump supporters really don't. It gets lip service because it's part of America's founding mythology, but so is "All men are created equal... with certain unalienable rights", which they really don't like.

  • Also news that Trump when President wanted to see voting records in areas affected by disasters to see if they were Trump-y enough to get federal aid

  • so is "All men are created equal... with certain unalienable rights", which they really don't like.

Tbf the founding fathers really didn’t like this either

  • "we were founded as a republic not a democracy" etc.

  • Tbf the founding fathers really didn’t like this either

Seems to have been mixed, with craven shits like Jefferson floating around in the middle.

    @hugo7

"we were founded as a republic not a democracy" etc.

The mating cry of idiots who knew nothing about history and politics, learned one single thing and decided to stop there.

  • Trump supporters don’t give a flying fuck about criminality including rape that’s for sure

  • I'm fascinated by Pence's inability to stand up for himself.
Wouldn't god make sure he's going to be OK as long as he just speaks the truth?

  • tina peters, colorado county clerk, gets 9 years prison sentence for trying to overturn the 2020 us election. hopefully this will help discourage any tampering in the upcoming election.
    another trumper goes to jail.

  • That was the weirdest thing I've seen in ages. Reminded me of Andy Barnard from the US Office for some reason.

  • I always enjoy listening to EK interview articulate people from the right (Emily Jashinsky).

Lots of discussion of the Old Right vs New Right*.
