• Since I’ve recently jumped head first into building a new bike I thought it may be a good time to start one of these since I’ve thought about it a couple of times, and hopefully I remember to update it more than once every 6 months.

I guess I’ll start with the bikes I already have with some old pictures and try to post some more up to date pictures when I get the time or as I make changes to the bikes:

    Peugeot Track Bike
According to it’s previous owner this was built for Fabrice Colas, who was a French track rider who was sponsored by Peugeot at the time. It’s an absolute machine and feels so easy to get going and just fly along on combined with a super twitchy Geo. It was the first bike I properly built up myself so it’s been through quite a few iterations and now has risers and a shorter stem but apart from the seatpost/saddle I’m pretty happy with where it’s at now.

    Genesis CdF Ti
Managed to get this as an insurance replacement after getting T-boned by a car. It was a mix of always wanting a Ti bike combined with it being pretty much the only thing available after the supply chain shortages after covid, and since I was meant to be riding across Europe the following week time was of the essence. As a result it got thrown together with whatever I had (including a free set of wheels left at the lbc by a student moving back home) and assembled the night before I left. It rides like a tank (in a good way) but I haven’t really touched it since building it up so it could definitely do with a couple of upgrades.

    Cinelli Vigorelli
Your bog standard Vigorelli, but with a fancy paint job. I know, real exiting. Built with the usual Thomson and Zipp finishing kit and a set of Halo Aerotrack wheels. Nothing special but it gets me around most days despite probably being on the small side for me.

    Bullitt
This is probably the only one that actually belongs in a scrapyard. Bought it used 4/5 years ago and apart from changing the brake pads every so often I haven’t really touched it. As a result the gears have a mind of their own and the headsets may be half disintegrated for all I know, but until it runs I don’t really plan on changing much. Eventually I’d like to change it to external gears and a few nicer bits but for now that’s a money pit that I’d rather not get into.

  • Seatpost aside, the colour and French/Japanese parts combination on the Peugeot track is magnificent. Can understand why you've gone for risers over the bullhorns but the Mavic's look so good on this.

  • Thanks so much, yeah I've been meaning to change the seatpost for a long time.
For a while it had a set of mavic 3G wheels on there so I had bought a hope seatpost to try to match those and the carbon risers but seeing it in person I don't think it realy fits the build (so it will probably end up on either the genesis or a soma wolverine which is in the works), and the 3Gs were just impractical anyways so I'll probably end up back at my original plan of putting a black nitto s92 on there, or maybe a simworks froggy... we'll see what I'm feeling like once I financially recover from a couple other recent purchases.

And yeah the pursuit bars definitely looked the part but my back didn't seem to like them so much unfortunately.

  • New project arrived at the LBS a few days ago and finally managed to get a proper look at it. The plan is to build this Soma Wolverine B into a a fixed gear tourer/tracklocross super commuter. Obviously the dropouts add a couple of steps to getting this built up but it shouldn't be too much of a faff with a Paul components disk word rear hub... The only other issue I can foresee is having to mess with a wider BB and the chain line if the cranks/chainring don't clear the chainstays but that's a bridge I'll cross when I get to it.

Ultimately went with s soma as something like a surly or a mash steel didn't have all the rack, bottle, mudguard etc. Mounts that I wanted, and also came up ever so slightly short in the tyre clearance department. I also considered a couple other frames, such as the omnium cx (and originally planned on the soma wolverine v4.1 - A) but the IRD sliding drop outs, geometry and availablity of this Soma made it the eventual final choice.

  • Couple more bits coming in for the Soma.

The plan was full silver finishing kit but a good deal on the handlebars stopped that plan dead in it's tracks pretty quickly.

  • Good post day yesterday. Firstly a nitto S92 which will be going on the Peugeot as soon as I find the time to cut it down as I tried to fit it and it got stuck about half way in.

  • And more excitingly, the Paul Components Word Fixed Disk Hub for the Soma, which has finally made it after aimlessly circling around california for a couple of weeks (shout out USPS i guess). And was instantly laced up to a Halo Devura as I'd like to have the Soma built up ready for the weekend.

  • Any more pics of the Bullitt and Soma? Both are probably aspirational bikes for me!

  • Sorry for the late reply. I'll try to get some up in the coming days. Only just built the soma up as a fixed tourer/traclocross bike on friday and managed to take it to scotland for the weekend, but forgot to take any decent photos.

  • Couple of better pictures of the Peugeot in it's current state. Managed to change the seatpost to a nitto s92... turns out it didn't need cutting down but just a little extra force

  • Love that Peugeot. Pretty aggressive geo. Any idea who built it? I've got an early '80s Peugeot piste, built by Gitane and with full painted logos.

  • Cool bike! Grazy geo, looks like a bike from a cartoon with those angles

  • ah nice, do you have any pictures of yours? not often you see other track peugeots. As for the frame builder, despite spending many evenings searching, I don't have any real clue, and neither did the guy who I bought it off unfortunately.

  • haha yeah, the very little rake on the forks doesn't help either but I guess that's what makes it so fun to ride

  • Just as a frameset so far. Build TBC. The geometry's a bit more standard than yours.

  • damn, still lovely. can't wait to see the build.

  • finally got round to taking some quick pictures of the Soma fully built up.

  • bit of background on this one:
the plan was to build a fixed gear steel trouring bike after having ridden to paris on my cinelli vigorelli and whilst having a lot of fun, it left me wanting more. So I guess a slightly better fitting geometry, bigger tyre clearance and a steel frame were the clear solution.

After considering the standard fixed gear options like a surly or mash I realised that something more on the gravel side might fit my demands better. After searching for an old Genesis day one in my size etc. for a couple of weeks, impatience got the better of me and along came the Soma Wolverine.

The bike was built up in a bit of a rush and as a result many parts are stolen off of other bikes (e.g. the front wheel is off of the genesis cdf) so this is a bit of a to do list of future upgrades (somewhat in order but proabably not):

    • mount fenders: most likely some kenisis fend-offs for now but eventually something silver

    • the bar ends keep popping out so I need to find a suitable replacement

    • get some nice bottle cages

    • mount a front disk brake (a rear will also follow for any longer trips)

    • change the chanring (and eventually the cog too) for a lighter ratio

    • dynamo lights: either supernova or exposure

    • build front wheel: silver dynamo (sp or son) to matching halo rim

    • change finishing kit (apart from handlebars that should maybe be cut down); curently thinking mainly silver parts (nitto or simworks) with a brown leather brooks, but I could could easily convinced to go with a fully blacked out look

  • Very nice! Need to finish off my SS, I'm nearly there...

  • Thank you, and what are you building up?

  • My old On-One Inbred, but it's got vertical dropouts not slot, so trying a combination of eccentric external BB and half chain links to get the tension correct...

I'll put a photo up when it's done!

  • I do like that Soma. For most of my life fixed wheel has meant track bikes to me. I took a track bike off road last week - 25c tyres along a bridleway last week - and loved it. Now I want something like your Soma, although I'll stick with drops.

  • This is excellent. I'm looking for a similar sliding dropout frame to run fixed. I have notifications set up for Checkpoints and Crocketts. Not sure what else is out there...

  • Is the low BB not annoying?
