  • Sadly those options don't help me fit bigger tyres and guards on my existing frame

  • If you're using plastic based guards (SKS for example), I had success in creating a bit more clearance by drilling holes in them and attaching them to the brake bridge with cable ties, rather than using the supplied L bracket.
    Or you could cut the guard and mount it fore and aft of the bridge, instead of going under it.

  • Anyone want a pair of barely used pre full metal fenders, 30mm? Am 100% confident people are getting ready to fit skinny tyres in time for winter.

    They did ok on the audax today but not quite enough clearance so was slight tyre rub after picking up some mud on the 28s so looking to get the road plus size.

  • Fit mudguards, never take them off, job done (this is my method anyway)

  • I wouldn't mind trying them to see if they fit under a fork with little clearance. I'll PM you.

  • Had the drill out earlier fitting some Raw mud flaps, so thought try a ghetto version of @spinnnout's elegant
    rear light placement. Filed an old Cateye fitting flat and bolted in on, with a strip of old inner tube underneath to hopefully soak up the vibrations. Let's see if it's still attached this time next week...

  • Interesting to see another silver Bluemels being drilled. I set out to make some flaps for my fixed on the work lasercutter. This was very successful when I did the same for Velo Orange guards, using the stay bolts to secure the flaps.

    Not so much this time - I think I botched the hole placement on the front flaps (it coincides with the stays, which are riveted) but I can’t work out how to bolt them on at all! What would you all use, M4 bolt and nut? Or rivets?

    Think the laser was also way high this time on the engrave setting as it warped the polyprop, and nearly blew right through it! I think round 2, lower laser and perhaps just one bolt hole would fix it.

  • Thanks!! Here’s the ones I did on my Stayer a while ago. Still going strong despite many a kerb or root strike - 0.8mm thick polyprop is super resilient.

    The Stayer logo is of course a total copyright violation, but don’t tell them.

  • hi mudguard enthusiasts, i'm also caving in and thinking to get hammered honjos for my IF club racer. have swapped the 32s that maxed out the clearance to 28s and got no idea what width to buy to ensure optimal fit and clearance.

    honjo owners, what's the best shot for this scenario? would h1c work?

    everyone else, is there a better suited equivalently stylish option that i should also consider? cheers!

  • Pelago 35 mm or Velo Orange

  • I use 40mm Berthoud mudguards with 30c (actual) tyres and they're a good fit. VO are nice too, not much between them.

  • Gave in and installed proper mudguards yesterday. Used Ass Savers whenever it was wet before this but now that the proper shitty weather is here they're not enough.
    Kona Sutra LTD 2020, 54, 2.25" Thunder Burts and 65mm SKS Bluemels. Older unused Ass Saver as a front flap.
    I had to bodge the rear mudguard to the seat stay bridge without the original part because there's not too much clearance and it was too thicc.

  • Just about to pull the trigger on some PDW 45s... my tyres are 38mm, but measure 42.2mm on my rims... the bike has clearance for 47mm... I'm thinking the 45s are as big as I can fit to my bike... will the 45s work? Will I die? Will I be wasting my money?!?!

  • I bought some Ribble 46mm cheapies to swap out some SKSs because I was putting a slightly bigger tire on the transporter and the Ribble claim is “for 30-40mm tires”.
    Well. Those 46mm cheapies arrive loose in a box with no instructions and are really REALLY bad. And they’re no bigger than the ones I already have.

    Tl;dr - avoid Ribble 46mm mudguards.
