I feel like a philistine, what is a handed pillowcase and does polite society dictate which side they open on, i.e. knives and forks! should the openings be matching on the inside or the outside?

Never known or cared. As long as it is clean and not white...as I had a Turin shroud moment after spending a day removing the undercoating on the bottom of a car, showering when tired and going to bed. While still being covered in sticky god knows what.
I know that IKEA had weird sized pillow cases,

Today I learnt that;
Not all pillowcases are handed. I bought a duvet set with a cover and two pillowcases. It’s got a pattern on it. I washed them and put them on the bed. There are 2 left hand cases. Ie the opening is on the right hand side. So I took them back. The people in the shop thought I was taking the piss. How have I got to 52 and never come across the fact that not all pillowcases are handed? What bullshit is this? They wouldn’t refund me either as I’d washed them FFS!
