If you're using plastic based guards (SKS for example), I had success in creating a bit more clearance by drilling holes in them and attaching them to the brake bridge with cable ties, rather than using the supplied L bracket.
Or you could cut the guard and mount it fore and aft of the bridge, instead of going under it.
Custom built frame with the brake bridge a few millimetres higher (well, that's what I go for), or smaller tyres.
