The Keep. I didn't know that was by Michael Mann. I remember watching that in the mid 80's. Great Tangerine Dream soundtrack as you say!

Enjoyed that a lot!

I read the Book Of The New Sun Series a couple of years ago but hadn't made that connection!
I never forget a useless fact. To be fair, the author had some justification, since stories echoing in both directions between the past and the future was a central theme, but that was possibly the the least highbrow reference in the series ;-) That said, I most probably missed a few.
I'll go looking for the film on Youtube, at some point. Minor bucket list item.

I didn't know that was by Michael Mann.
Surprise to me, too. It was nearly Highlander 3 levels of bad, with the same feeling that they'd taken the trailer from another film (Highlander, in the case of Highlander 3) and padded it with scraps from the cutting room floor.

I’ve seen Climax three times and about to watch is again very soon.
One of those movies that keeps you tense almost through out the whole viewing, which I love!

Was going to see Megalopolis; Francis Ford Coppola's passion project, then I watched Mark Kermode's review of it and boy does he savage it! Apparently, it's bad, not good bad, not bad bad it's good, just solid bad. Kermode's review is worth a watch IMO.

Kermode's review is worth a watch IMO.
"It begins like a naff remake of Caligula... I have to say, Caligula - in any of it's versions - is shaper, funnier and more incisive than anything in Megalopolis". And that was one of the more generous comments.

Oh man, I would not want to watch it alongside the original. I keep thinking that it felt like a film that was made by someone who’d read the plot synopsis of and seen a few stills from the original movie but who’d absolutely failed to grasp the whole vibe of what made it good. Can’t imagine how shit it would seem standing right next to it.
Haven’t gone back to watch the last hour yet. Imagine I’ll get around to it before it leaves Prime in the next week, but I won’t feel any sense of urgency around it.

It seems to be universally panned! I can't wait to see what all the fuss is about.

Took me 3 goes.

Noted! I think we have pretty similar tastes so I'll definitely add it to the list. Not clever but fun is perfect for midweek, brain off time.
Tonight's viewing was Sideways by Alexander Payne. I remember watching it not long after it came out with my parents and was definitely too young to enjoy it then. Much better on a second watch 10ish years later. Paul Giamatti is great in it. The Holdovers by the same director is even better though.

You mention highlander (great movie) french Scotsman and Scot Egyptian? Yet don't mention the second film.
Or do you not see 2 as linked to the Highlander franchise

Sideways is great, not least if you are eating out and anyone asks what you’d like you say “I’m not drinking any fucking Merlot”, even better if it’s somewhere nice with the wine waiter in attendance (note that I have never done this anywhere but wish I could dare to be great, just once noting that in my scenario the wine waiter acknowledges the reference with a nod so subtle that only I notice it. But not so subtle that it never happened)

^ I may have been drinking said Merlot

Highlander 2 was deeply eccentric, but my point is that 3 had about as much content (and almost identical content) as the trailer for the first film, stretched out over a whole film.
-
• #21244
Deeply eccentric is quite kind.
Nor sure that I remember any of the trailers for 3, or for 1. But have seen films that were similar.
Still listen to the Highlander sound track. Tho I still listen to the top gun soundtrack.

What's everyone watching this spooky season?
Couple freebie recommendations, Bull on 4OD and Host on the Iplayer. I haven't been a big fan of A24 horror films but i did love Hugh Grant in Paddington 2 so am quite excited to see The Heretic. I've also got that clown movie that made people puke and pass out on the list. Feel like he's under appreciated compared to Carpenter on here so will dig out some Craven classics.

Bull has been on the watchlist for a while actually, should give it a go.
Also, some hot Saab action in Sideways if you've not seen it! -

We have a Japanese filmfestival around the corner. Karaoke Iko (or Let's go Karaoke!) was fantastic, lots of lolz.

I get this now...
Really enjoyed it, good film.
Willy's Wonderland is on Freevee too now, so that'll be next.
On C4 I see Pig, Hearts of Darkness and Lola have been added!

I remember the Saab but I also remember everyone being annoying knobs. 2 decades since I've watched it so like you maybe I'll enjoy it more now.
Saab's always seem to stand out, before Drive my car, Paid in full was my favourite.

Wow, The Substance is pretty bonkers, proper old fashioned.
Colour out of space is on Prime! Been meaning to watch it for ages as a fan of the genre.
