The fall of the Tory party

  • Donald Trump?

  • It would be funny to see him doing the full Homer at work, head back, tongue lolling, snoring on the opposition bench

  • Whoever gets elected as leader isn’t going to be in the role long term. The entire party seems to have completely missed the reasons why they lost the election and why they performed so badly. Until they recognise those, and begin to address them then they will continue to lose votes to Farage and the LibDems.

  • Unfortunately, we're stuck with a 2 party system. This means that one party needs to oppose and holds the govt of the day to account. The Tories left the reality based community a long time ago. This means that there is a vacuum at present. Let's hope other parties have the desire to step up and serve democracy.

  • On their current course, they're going to end up with a four figure membership - all in care homes - and a parliamentary rump so crazy that it looks like they escaped from 28 Days Later. Although I suppose they'll merge with Reform by that point.

  • Where's Rishi? He is, actuall, still leader; but haven't seen or heard from him at all. Where is he? Is here there? Thought he might of got to say "goodbye and sorry."

Is he simply going to be forgot about? The leader who never was.

  • He spoke on day 1 iirc?

  • Although I suppose they'll merge with Reform by that point.

More than half their membership want that now - the once all-powerful Tory party to be subsumed in a hostile takeover by Farage.

  • I’m not convinced we are stuck in a two party system anymore. Both the LibDems, and to a lesser extent, Labour showed at the last election how effective targeting your resources on winnable seats can be. If you have 4 or 5 parties all consistently polling in the twenties and teens then the electoral system will have to reflect that eventually, and voters have shown they can adapt to this change in the most recent election.

  • I think most Tories would prefer that Liz Truss was the leader who never was to be honest.

  • Sunak did a speech a few days ago didn't he? What would he say anyway? "I get it, I get it, right" when everyone knows he doesn't or didn't in fact get it whatever it was his one skill was completely not getting it.

  • I completely missed Sunak and his speech, speaks volumes to me.

  • They should just rip off the plaster and give it to Badenoch whilst it doesn't matter too much and there's no election coming up.
IIRC they tried to keep Johnson away from the members choice but couldn't in the end; it feels inevitable that Badenoch (or someone of a similar ilk) will get it eventually

  • Think it was one of those smaller gatherings or I dreamt it.

  • Why don't we just make Farage PM? Why don't they just appoint Trump as Fuhrer now?

  • I meant that they should get it over with now, and let her be their reactionary, irrelevant short term opposition leader for a couple of years. Then maybe they'll be able move forward. Not that I'm the least bit invested in their rehabilitation, I'd rather they disappeared completely.

I wasn't suggesting that they promote her to be the new PM.

  • Because maybe many Tory MPs they feel that her being leader would be bad, whether for a short period or not.

  • This surprised me

  • just act normal guys.

“Let’s be enthusiastic, relatable, positive, optimistic,” Cleverly said. “Let’s be more normal.”

Last to speak was Badenoch: “If I become leader, we will immediately begin a once in a generation undertaking,” she said, promising a “comprehensive plan to reprogramme the British state”.

  • I tried to listen to some of the speeches today, I couldn't handle more than about 5 minutes of any of them. Normally I have a high tolerance when it comes to politics but I just couldn't...

  • Looks like Tugger went down badly. He's gone out to 70-1.
And Badenoch has drifted out to 7.

Jenrick is hot favourite vs Cleverly but the membership polling is pretty close.

  • 5 minutes of each.
    My you do have stamina

I tried to watch the 30s clips of each and felt sick the rest of the day

  • All as expected.

  • .
