  • Will follows the thread already and doesn't appreciate the extra unnecessary notifications

  • Didn’t realise LFGSS did that, or that I could do that.

  • Don't you just unselect 'notify me by email'?

  • User @davidual didn't seem to get the memo either, but has yet to be reminded

  • I have set for no email notifications but my follow page can get upto 3 for a single reply with name quote iirc, thread title, reply alert, tag alert.

I can live with that although it does clutter the following page until they get bumped down.

  • Maybe it's just the following page clutter they don't appreciate, I forget. 🤷

  • The quality of journalism is generally poor but, fuck me, the absolute state of Mike Graham - The Independent State if Mike Graham, “you can grow concrete”, Plank of the Week etc 🤦‍♂️

  • So maybe I’m missing something here but if genuinely confused. What’s the difference between Russians “special military operation” in Ukraine and Israel’s reported “limited ground incursion” in Lebanon. As an outsider with limited historical context in both conflicts it seems to both me one sovereign state acting as an aggressor and using their military to enter into another sovereign state for the purpose of… something military related.

I’ve tried to be aware but not involved when it’s come up in conversation with friends/acquaintances but it seems to be coming harder to do so I should probably find out more.

Any links to additional (published, peer reviewed, non-emotional etc ) reading?

  • The Ukrainians weren't firing rockets onto Russian territory before the launch of the "special military operation".

Not that I condone Israeli actions in any way, but, from their perspective, they have hostile forces attacking them from Lebanon.

  • ^^ 'Beware of Small States' by David Hirst is a good book about the history of Lebanon. If you are anywhere near Stoke Newington you can borrow my cope.

  • How do I subscribe to a page?

  • You auto subscribe by replying, else click follow/unfollow in the page menu.

  • Thanks that’s very kind. Not London based but will see if they have it in the local library

  • Possibly one of the most polarising issues on here.

  • The notification settings on here are quite comprehensive. I'm not sure what the problem is.

(The notifications annoyed me so I disabled them all.)

  • The notification system has also been broken for years, so maybe it’s malfunctioning?

(I only sporadically get a notification that I have a PM).

  • I thought it was the extra noise on the Following page that's the issue, not email alerts. As I heard it, it is the way, in Wigan, to greet the list of recently updated threads with a joy that is unaffected by personal concerns. Threads are then read in the knowledge that all comments are important, and that replies to a person's own comments will be noticed if that is their destiny. Maintaining this state of equanimity is essential to reaching a plane where responses can be crafted from water that once shared the same jar as the comment they're replying to, so that the orignal commentor can read them and feel satisfied even though there's no "@" and no answer.

Actual "@" replies fuck this up royally.

  • OK, so it just needs another notification setting to turn off @ replies appearing in the Following page.

  • That or everyone has to remember not to @ reply to a specific subset of forum posters.

(I do my best to remember but if the cardinality of that subset grows I may not be able to do so reliably.)

  • Palestine or the @ function?

  • @Greenbank the subset could probably be covered off via a reference post in this thread, it might not even reach 5.

  • If you only ever use the following page, then how do you discover new content?

  • It gets linked from the Popcorn thread.

(Occasionally I'll click the Today link.)
