  • yeah that was all ok. Such a long time since I'd had the wheel out & I stupidly took the retaining nut off that holds the cable attachment piece - tried several positions but nothing worked. However Flying Dutchman Bikes sorted it out ;-D

  • Yeah, but can I go bigger? And is there any point?

  • The lock on my shimano battery is Abus, am I able to get an Abus d lock (and possibly frame lock) keyed alike to my current battery key? My key game is becoming unbearable and anyway I can reduce it would be amazing.

  • Man, I'm so lazy.

Thanks! Although it appears the answer to my question is no.

  • I don't live in the UK, so can't really comment on where to get one, sorry. (When I bought mine, I had to import it from Germany as the Swiss importer didn't carry it either). Will grab a picture next time I'm out with it, currently mainly using my Omnium.

  • Where are you trying to sell it?

  • Get a tandem. Cheap and come with child assistance. What is the rationale for a cargo bike with a 7yo?

Just stumbled across this post from a few weeks back - thanks, it's good advice for me at the moment.
Daughter has decided that she doesn't want to go in the Bullitt any more. So I am selling that and I was thinking of a long tail, but a tandem probably makes more sense. We already have a tagalong, which she enjoys.

  • Have you seen the Circe Helios?

    https://www.circecycles.com/products/helios/

It can convert between child tandem / adult tandem / cargo

  • Hi dub-k - Selling mine here:

Decided to shorten it, but haven't got the hacksaw out yet so it's still for sale in theory.

  • Yes, I've often wondered how I could justify buying one!

The main issue is that my wife doesn't currently have a good way of child carrying. The routes to where she needs to go are just a bit too busy for daughter to ride on her own bike, and my wife isn't confident to ride with her on the road, so we need something.

I have the tagalong and I also have a rear seat on a solo which work ok, but my wife doesn't have either. What I really need to do is get her to get something. It could be a Helios, but if I set up the seat on her bike that might work well enough. It's only going to be short journeys - 1-2km max so even the Helios might be overkill.

Thanks for the input - helpful to straighten out my thinking.

Come on man. This is the cargobike thread. A used Helios is buttons in comparison and can be setup as a midtail. 2-4-1!

Or did you mean how to justify only buying one?

  • I'd love to be able to get a x3 Helios and ride both kids to school. There used to be a guy and his daughter on my commute on one, and it seemed so idilic. We'll probably move miles away by the time it becomes a viable option for our youngest... Although I guess you could have one spot crankless with just a seat(?)

  • In a less pricy option there are a load of Thorn's on ebay at the moment, including one with a Swytch. Although with a 7yo you'll probably be OK.

Definitely the cheaper proof of concept.

  • Jousting?

  • Thanks, good thoughts!

I'll certainly be able to justify spending the money if someone buys my Bullitt. I really need it to go first, for the space as well as finance (https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/399579/#comment17526862 quick plug in case anyone wants it!)

Those Thorns are tempting, a lot of bike for the money. I dk about Swytch but electric would be fun as long as it doesn't look too deliveroo.
    As is a Helios.
I just showed daughter some pics of both and she is into the idea, but we need to get buy in from my wife - as its mainly for her (well sort of but not really!). I also need something that can take daughter + panniers or other luggage for grocery shopping trips which either tandem would do well

I guess I need the Bullitt to go first so mustn't get carried away and start bidding on stuff, but good to have a plan!

  • A FollowMe would be better than a simple tagalong, but a kiddy back Thorn should be a lot more fun.

  • Same

  • My man, thats how you do it. (Presenly trying to buy a 5th cargo bike)

  • Always compare it against the cost of buying a car. Even if it is in no way equivalent.

  • It's more about the space than the money. A car could sit outside so would actually be easier. I don't want a car though as they are boring and slow, and we already have one we hardly use apart from holidays!

In other news my wife says she doesn't want anything, she's happy to walk / bus the journeys that she does with daughter, until she is ready to ride own bike everywhere in another year.

I reckon it might take a bit longer until daughter is bossing it on the Uxbridge Road, but it means I don't have to take into account what my wife wants - although I wouldn't be surprised if she ends up using it once I have it.

    So criteria:
Needs to be able to take 1 child + shopping / panniers.
    I think I want electric.
    Fun to ride

Which is the nicest to ride? I'd have thought Thorn kiddyback has to be more fun than the Helios or a longtail. Maybe that's the best option, either with that Swytch kit or, and sort out electrics separately...

  • Idk how a Helios rides, but a couple of things I've noticed:

    • Helios is shorter than a thorn kiddy back (235-240cm vs 211cm).
    • lots of Thorn's have multiple pedal drillings in the cranks to help with shorter legs. No idea if that matters with a 7yo.
    • Thorns look like they have clearance for bigger tyres.
    • pannier set up on the Helioses (Helioi?) I've seen tends to be neater. But then lots of Thorns don't look like the racks have been installed very considerately - 700c on a 26", etc. so I think you could improve on that.

Also there's a tandem thread if you want some informed opinions rather than someone who's been daydreaming solutions for 5yrs.

  • Jousting is old school. Attack helicopters are where it's at.

Thanks again, as someone who spends a lot of time daydreaming solutions, I'm very grateful for the material!

IKWYM about racks on thorn tandems, that one with the swytch looks unusable.

I'll head back to the tandem thread for more inspiration...

  • Has anyone ever tried the steering damper on a bullitt and can you share what you thought?
