  • Squadrats newbie here. I'm liking it so far (not so much the squadratinhos). I've had Veloviewer for years, but never really paid attention to the tiles before now. Plus I like the fact that walks and paddleboard sessions make my yard bigger.

I've had CFS since getting covid in 2020, so can only manage short rides (less than 15km) nowadays. I'm finding it more interesting to work out little routes to bag a tile or two than just doing my usual mini loops and straight lines. I don't mind driving a few miles in the van and unloading the bike for new roads and tiles.

So in the past week I've grown my max square from a paltry 6x6 to a slightly less paltry 9x9. I may even get to double figures soon!

  • Rdwgps keeps crashing the n google chrome. Anyone else experienced this? Seems to only happen on larger files.
    Anything I should check/ do?

  • I've not noticed that. I did send Artur an error grab from RWGPS "view" page a day or so ago and he said he fixed that.

  • Mine just goes to a white screen offers me to continue from auto save, and then does the same again… :-(

  • Nah, not had any of that in Chrome or Firefox.

Tried a hard reload? (open Dev Tools and right click Refresh and empty cache full reload or CTRL+F5)

    Also, update your browsers.

  • Squadrats has stopped working in route preview page of RWGPS. I raised with Artur, the developer, but he can't replicate. We could be on different versions of it though so he's waiting a bit to see if whatever they changed gets rolled out to him.

  • Am I right in thinking Squadrats requires you to sync all your existing activities via Strava and/or Garmin Express - there's no way of manually adding activities?

For reasons similar to @lesterama I am trying to start from zero. And the little tiles (squadratinhos if we must) may help me with this.

I have created an account but can't seem to see any contact details, and no help other than the very basic Rules page.

If I skip Garmin/Garmin sync I see nothing at all on the Activities page apart from 'synchonising...'.

(I could create a new Strava account I suppose?)

Edit: the Terms of Service say:

You agree when uploading activities to squadrats.com or to the Squadrats App (either by uploading manually or synchronising via Strava

... so I guess there is/was a way to manually upload. But now my Activities page just says

No activities ... If you have activities in Strava or Garmin, you can synchronise them automatically... Connect to Strava ... Connect to Garmin

so maybe manual upload was discontinued?

  • I don't understand - a manual upload has no GPX track right? That renders it useless for tile bagging which needs a GPX track showing you're in a square.

  • 10k ride to get one little squadie that's been sitting a while and increased my little square by 2 and jumped 130 ranks (and moved it vertically). I'm really running out of options now though - secured private residence and/or train sidings that I'm not prepared to wander in to are going to end up having my squaddie square move over somewhere I guess.

  • I meant an individual upload of a GPX file or similar.

  • You still need to link Squadrats to your Strava account.

If you want to pick and choose files that get Squadratted, you can set their visibility to Public or not. Only Public rides get ANALysed.

  • Yes I understand that now. I actually found an email address and got an almost immediate response from the developer confirming that Strava/Garmin Express sync is required (at least until they get their mobile app finished).

So I guess I'll create a new empty Strava account and use it with that. Probably for the best.

Edit: although when you opt in to Strava sync, there's an option to allow it to 'View data about your private activities', so I'll try it with all activities private.

  • Works fine for me with private activities

  • Have to go drop some 5-a-side bibs off at a mates house in Clapham during my lunch break so, of course, I make a convoluted route to pick off some tiles there and back.

  • When you say tiles you talk about the small ones? Not the large ones that are 1 mile wide?
Anybody knows how they are called in Statshunter? I can see them in the Garmin map
with the Statshunter extension but not on the actual website.

  • I just call them squadies because I can't be fucked saying squadratinhos.

The actual tile specification has various sizes, think they're called "levels"
    https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Zoom_levels

  • can't be fucked saying squadratinhos.

I can't even be fucked to look at the Squadrats website, the interface make me feel sick.

  • I much prefer it to statshunters. Squadrats seemed faster and easier to see what was missing when planning in RWGPS.

  • I didn't know the small tiles were a thing until recently, I have been doing the big ones inside the
M25 this year and all the roads in Greenwich which covers almost all the small ones except for
a few in the middle of parks.

  • I save the little ones for lunch rides. My square is too big to get big ones in a lunch break.

  • Yeah, the smaller tiles. I've got loads I can still do that I can get in a lunch break. If today goes right I should get somewhere around 80-100. There's also a load of smaller tiles near me in the middle of Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common which can be mopped up with a couple of lunchtime runs.

I can't realistically get any of the big (~1 mile) tiles during a lunch ride, all my local stuff is done (and North London is dull). The next tiles I want to target on my main square are 40km away.

My plans for covering the inside of the M25 were abandoned when I went back to full-time work. No other time to ride, most weekends are taken up with family stuff.

  • I've just seen this thread and signed up to Squadrats this week - figure it's maybe a good way of keeping motivation going and finding some new places to run/ride. Only joined Strava recently too, so coming from a very low starting point. Looks like cycling will get the big squares, and running will do the -inhos.

Went out last night in the wet and dark to increase my 'big' square from 5x5 to 8x8, so guess it must be motivating me already. The square stopping me from 9x9 is woods with no roads, so will need to go running there sometime.
