  • Exercised an enormous amount of restaint on Denmark St this afternoon. Some lovely vintage stuff out there but way overpriced, for example, a 1983 JV strat for just shy of £2k. If that's how much they fetch, anyone want mine?

  • If you want to bring pickups we can swap them out too.

  • JVs have become very hyped, to the point that Fender themselves have been selling new Japanese-made guitars using that name.

  • Anyone else following this geezer on the socials playing TV themes? Top quality!

  • That actually rings a bell! We played with BB&tB a few times and I actually had a conversation with him about that and it being an old old Squier of sorts, though that was nigh on 20 years ago, fair to say the memories are hazy (for a few reasons...).

Last time I saw them was in 2008, by which time Alfredo Hernandez wasn't in the lineup and Giampaolo was the drummer for the European dates and I seem to remember him rocking an SG of sorts at that point.

  • That’s probably the coolest story I’ve heard in a while. Brant is a fucking dude. Quite possibly the coolest guy in the music industry.
Last time I saw him play maybe 2022? was some double cut Ibanez thing.
This is the guitar I have seen him play live the most. In those tutorial vids he’s straight into the Marshall and it’s sounds so fuckin’ smooth.

@Sparky nice one! I think I’ll save for another month or so and we’ll do the whole thing in one hit :)

  • Didn't know owt about him. Educate my ears now.

Loving the DIY pedals btw. Dyno fadez and all. Very cool.

  • Ah just seen this, appreciate the offer but I’m going to dork out and do some research.
Thanks for the offer though :)

  • He was the drummer for kyuss, has been a pretty central player in the desert rock scene ever since and seems to be an all round good dude. He’s been in tons of rad bands over the years.

Saved by Magic by Brant Bjork and the Bros is a good place to start.

  • Cheers fella

  • He’s touring in Jan/feb with his new band ft Mario Lalli. It’ll be great fun.

  • Keep eyeing this set up, definitely a bit overkill though.
    I do love a closed cover…

  • I was lucky enough as my good friends booked a couple of his early gigs in Italy and from then on we saw them a bunch of times and often got a chance to hang - genuinely lovely people.

I actually got my memory tangled up as Alfredo Hernandez was never in the band, but he was there once as they were touring with Mondo Generator, except they had a fallout the night before in Germany, so MG didn't play but Alfredo was still there. Their drummer used to be a guy called Mike who went on to form a band called Biblical Proof of UFOs. He dropped by my hometown while travelling in Europe on the night Italy defeated Germany in the 2006 world cup semi final and we ended up hanging out and soaking in the post football buzz. Great times!

@Dooks-Fatberg my recommendation would be Jalamanta and if you play one song only make it Automatic Fantastic. The smoothness @edmundro speaks of will reveal itself in spades.

  • Cool story bro!
I lose track of members of bands in that scene, feel like everyone is fairly interchangeable and that Brant, Alfredo and Ruban Romano have been in all of them at some point.
I have online guitar lessons with Bob from Fu Manchu, the biggest head fuck is realising he’s also in a band called Sun and Sail Club which features both Scott Reeders’
Met Nick Oliveri recently when he did his Death Acoustic show in Walthamstow of all places. Bit of a fruitcake.

Listening to Jalamanta in the workshop today. Damn groovy.

  • I mean, I wouldn't mind having Brant Bjork or Alfredo Hernandez on drums on my records? haha

I remember Brant mentioning that there was a world in which he might have been an original member of QOTSA but things weren't quite set in stone (no pun intended...) and then he joined Fu Manchu so that was that and Alfredo Hernandez got the nod instead. All very Desert Session in a way.

Also, I definitely thought Scott Reeder was a multi instrumentalist growing up, until the internet began big enough to tell me it was in fact two of them! Guess I only had the sleeve notes to go by...

Nick Oliveri is the least Walthamstow person I can think of 😂

  • Yeah, it was definitely a bit odd. All the Walthamstow mums at the gig in Lucy+Yak dungarees with their toddlers was a bit weird.
He plays a good show though and full of funny stories.

I’d pick being in Fu Manchu over Qotsa any day. Bob explained their career path in my last lesson with him, they basically worked out how to tour as much as they could be bothered while living a good life and not having to leave their families behind half the year. Sounds like they got it sussed.

  • Looks like this might be what I’m after?

It’s got the sc101s as described in the linked thread.

  • I think that's exactly what you're after. You'll have to see if the pickguard holes line up with your body but even if not you can likely just shift everything over to your existing pickguard.

  • Yep, very tempting.
My other option that I keep looking at is these Lace Hot Golds..
Less convenient than a plug and play replacement and realistically they’re probably not exactly what I’m after.

  • I've bought pickups from here before and been happy with them

    https://www.warmanguitars.co.uk/

  • Cheeky offer submitted, in no rush so all good if it goes to someone else.
I’d either keep the existing tortie pickguard or get an aged pearl one made up probably :)

Edit- cheeky offer rejected. I’m sure the price is fair but I’m not that desperate right now. There’s a few sets of the pickups for sale so I’m sure they come up fairly often.

  • Soul destroying 5hrs in the shed trying to eliminate a bit of a buzz from the electrics in my epi 335 - gutted it - totally re-wired it as carefully as I could. Ended up even worse. FML . Tomorrow will be a do-over with brand new components. Hideous

  • @RonAsheton, this is for sale down under and I've never seen a cooler guitar.

  • That's cute, let me know if you need a retail assist. 😋💸
