  • Voile nano straps or pedal straps, depending what’s at hand!

  • I have one of the big super C messenger/courier bags gathering dust. Any interest from anyone to take that off my hands? Maybe £35 posted in the UK.

  • An already bent bagman with a sheared off bolt... Was gonna bend some new rails for it, even ordered up some rod. But couldn't get the rails off. So I just "massaged" them into the desired shape.

  • How are people supporting the Nelson?

  • 51.59 m of granite seems to be the best-known method:

  • I'm a convert to saddlebags supported on racks now. Unbelievably the bagman weighs MORE than a large number of racks, which have added functionality!

Caveat, you obvs need appropriate space between saddle and rack etc.

  • Always this for the bigger size Carradice.

  • Tbh having used a rack and panniers a bit more I do think they're great.

At some point there will be a rack 'n pannier renaissance once people realise how much more sensible they are than all this over complicated bike packing nonsense that's more expensive and takes away your bidons.

It's made all the more ridiculous by the number of braze-ons every frame now seems to have. Fine if you've got a carbon frame with none it's a great solution, but when even your handlebars have 3pack mounts why the fuck are you bunggying all the things.

  • My zipped roll looks a bit saggy and sad most of the time.

It is mostly empty and useful for extra capacity, e.g if I stop at the shop etc.

Is there a more structurally compliant alternative I could impulsively throw £££ i don't have at or hack/bodge to help pick this one up?

I will tinker with the hack/bodge I've used when fitting it but also keen to get expert advice too.

  • I’ve heard of people using estate agent sign type plastic to stiffen up the bases of saddlebags. Maybe something similar could be done on your roll?

A lot of handlebar bags have plastic sheets sewn into them these days for this exact reason.

  • A section of a 2l plastic drinks bottle might do it?

  • Correx board (estate agent signs) I find a bit rattly but some cut up yoga mat (or similar) provides not quite as good structure but a lot less noise. And good enough I’ve found for other bar bags

  • ^ in a similar vein, I have used cut up 2mm rubber sheet I had left over from making mudflaps for mudguards (+ washers to stop rack rattling) to good effect in both a rack bag and a Barley.

  • Thanks @hollow__legs @nonowt @C4r1s & @c00ps all useful tips, appreciated!

Sad-sag free update to follow soon all being well.

  • Keen to see how it works out.

I’ve ordered my first ever Carradice this week, an Odyssey XL saddlebag along with the Bagman QR and the support struts. Looking forward to using it on my commute and not using a backpack. I have some Audax patches ready to sew onto it.

  • Did you get the bigger Bagman, you'll need that for the Odyssey.

  • Nice. You won’t regret it. Perfect commuter set up

  • Yes, the Expedition I think it’s called? It was offered alongside the bag as part of a discounted bundle on the Carradice website.

  • @rhb I use the side of a plastic A4 folder cut to shape in my bar bag. Helps it keep a barrel shape.

  • What is it? I love my Nelson, but sometimes want for something a little bigger.

  • It’s an Odyssey XL. It expands to almost double this size.

  • Brilliant, looks simple & effective
