  • Teeny tiny dj

    New stage name? :)

  • Mixes were all coming out very quiet. Found I couldn't normalise them effectively without compressing/limiting them pretty hard first.

Also dance music. Dynamics are optional amirite

  • I played a short chromebook set at Stretford Public Hall earlier this eve, was fun.

Free app, sd card with 1000's of tunes & no controller way harder to search through tracks & plan ahead than a bag of vinyl & decks, but was easier to cycle to.

  • New amp day. It's early so I haven't turned it up more than 10% but it's LOUD

  • Pffft, I've counted the thick white lines and it doesn't even go up to 11.

  • Looks snug, will it get enough air around it to keep components cool? My old rotel went pop in a similar configuration, which reminds me I have still not got around to getting it fixed.

  • I hope so - the back has a gap. I can always get a fan blowing on it.

The old one worked fine for 20 odd years in the same position, and that was a bit bigger

  • IS that a custom built unit that the amp/records are in? Looks really nice

  • It's an old Ikea thing, predates the Kallax (I think). I can't remember what it was called, but the shelves just about fit the hi-fi separates and 12 inch records, and the bottom ones without the shelves are really easy to get records in and out of.

I bought them all as doubles, they were made as blocks of 4, but a mate had some, and the shelves bowed as they weren't really thick enough to support all the records.

I think I might end up designing something bespoke to be honest, I left the amp on for a few hours with nothing playing, and it's pretty warm to the touch now, five hours later. Or I might bodge some PC fans on the back for some airflow

I think that is the only way if you want something decent. I have Kallax that I have made into an L shape. I have of course run out of room for records again though!

  • Yeah tell me about it. I've got three boxes of 7s downstairs and about another 3-400 records down there too. No room upstairs with the others unfortunately

  • I got a call to play last night, easy listening set (k&d vibes) to not scare folks away ahead of a quiz night. Ended up playing quiet instrumental beds to the quiz rounds too and more tunes after so it was quite a long set at 3hrs+ all digital using free version of djay for android on my chromebook on which i'm now finding my way around searching much easier plus it has queue & history options that allow a virtual record bag to be filled with a core set of tunes making a useful filter.

It might become a monthly gig but not always a quiz, the time before was a channel for a silent disco.

  • That sounds fun, I wish I had enough easy stuff to play a set of it!

It would be useful now - currently playing 45s to a pretty much empty bar. Hence browsing LFGSS!

  • Hope it got busier for you!

  • It did not 😅
I ended up sacking it off early. Just not fun - I can play records to myself at home!

  • I can play records to myself at home!

That's what I did last night, playing with the sync feature in djay (aka cheating at mixing) 🤣

    We've all been there! 🙏🏼

  • That's great it's got a special switch just for when you play

  • Shameless plug: did you see this? 😉

Done it too, not fun. Even had the bar manager asking me to turn down the already low volume. And this was playing in front of an empty dance floor 😵‍💫

  • I did not! Epic post! Bookmarked for when I can play it at the volume it deserves.

  • Nice one thanks. I'm about as far off Andy C levels of skill as it is possible to get but useful nonetheless. Will give sone of your mixes a listen & share too.

  • Cheers both, enjoy!

  • Anyone have any experience of the DJ rehearsal spots like Pirate Studios? I keep seeing mixed reviews but keen to get a couple of hours practise in before playing a set at a friend's wedding next week.
