  • Friday Night Under the Lights 5k this evening in Battersea Park, and some silly quick times. I was happy to finish a little way down the field of the third fastest race (out of four) in 16:10. Only good enough for 4th v50 on the night (my club mate improved his top v50 ranking time with 15:09!) but very happy with my fastest time over the distance in 9 years, and just 6 secs outside my road pb.

    Maybe the sub-16 dream is still alive!

  • Cracking performance @PhilPub, sub 16 (or close) as a v50 is amazing.

    Top 300 for me at nat xc, it was bone dry. We only turned out 4 men though, from a club membership of hundreds, so no team position.

  • I'd like to get a pair of running shoes specifically for rainy days to give me a better grip on wet tarmac. Where should I be looking? The various Nike Trail models are marketed towards off piste runs, but so far these appear to be closest fit to my need.

  • I've had a couple of pairs of Nike peg trails and really like them wet grip is good but tarmac wears the tread on them really quickly so unless your doing a lot of mixed surface runs you'll probably be better with a grippy road shoe. Like tyres compound is more important for grip than tread. My mud claws were great in deep mud but awful on tarmac especially in the wet. Adidas do some models with Continental rubber which doesn't look like much but is very grippy and I didn't notice any excess wear on mine. Bostons are always solid and the new Adizero Adios pros are great. I'd also avoid anything with the current trend of mega high stack and bounce they're great in straight lines but not fun cornering especially in the wet.

  • The stack on the Bostons was getting pretty high but the last couple of versions they have dialed it back a little. I've had a few pairs of Mizuno with Goodyear outsoles which last forever but are nowhere near as good as the Continental in the wet. I found Saucony Fast twitch particularly grippy as well as both my Altra Escalates very grippy but because the ones I had were mesh or knit I did get wet feet

  • I’ve been wearing the Puma velocity nitro 3 quite a bit recently. Honestly for the price I think it’s cracking. Will be great in autumn/winter as there’s plenty of grip.
    The run testers recommended the deviate nitro 3 as one of their favourite trainers but I thought I would see now I got on with the velocity as for £80 it seemed worth a go.

    You can pick the deviate up for £110 which seems ‘reasonable’ by todays prices

  • It looks like Adidas Solar Glide 5 M GTX is the best match for what I need, but it seems to be sold out everywhere. Or does the gore-tex make it a boil in the bag experience?

    I don't know Puma in terms of running shoes, but agree that the prices aren't too horrific.

  • My Nike and Hoka Gore-tex runners don't seem too hot. I've got a couple of pairs of non Gore-tex trainers that feel hotter. Are you looking for these?

  • Another vote for Puma regarding grip. I like the shoe as well but the grip is way better than the Asics or Nike I can compare them to.

  • Starting to really enjoy this running business, but I’m a bit stumped as some days it’s super easy, other days body just won’t cooperate. Borrowed a watch with all the farkles and did a 6k in 30.21 minutes today. Quite pleased.

  • Thursday my shins just said go fuckyourself. Today just felt breezy; felt like I just keep going, but thought better take it easy and ramp up gradually.

  • "Ran" (maybe better to say that I finished it) a trail 50k yesterday, organisers ran out of water which was less than ideal in 35 degrees, 90% humidity. My only consolation was that I didn't think I got any blisters on my feet - turns out I was wrong, I have (or had) them on my soles and heels... past tense because my cat just attacked my feet and now I don't have as many blisters.

    If anyone would like a cat, please let me know.

  • I ran a local trail race yesterday. The weather was awful, leaving the field who did turn up and start exchanging a few questioning glances as we all ran up a big, open hillside in a thunderstorm.

    I had a lot of fun, and embraced the soaking and mud as good prep for the upcoming XC season which I'll be taking part in for the first time. Despite a 10k next weekend being my main focus and this just fitting in with training, I came away with 12th place overall which I was really happy about.

    Now in a super busy work week where I'll struggle to get any miles in.

  • Did the 24 hour track race in Battersea park at the weekend (Sri Chinmoy Self Transcendence). Really enjoyed it and came away with a little trophy for 6th place so was very happy! Was 6 hours of relatively warm sunny weather, followed by 7 hours of rain and then an overcast morning to try to slog out the last bit. Wasn't anywhere as monotonous as I thought it would be, ran well for the first 19 hours, then had a major lull and rallied for the last hour. Digestion suffered and was a fairly unpleasant experience, basically gave up on solid food about 9 hours into the race and survived on energy gels and Haribo for 15 hours!
