  • @Chalfie @glws - yup that’s mine - guards have been on and off a few times so far - take seconds to reinstate - currently running 27c but could go to 30c (might be tight up front) 👍🏻

QR skewer with everything removed but lever and nut through the thru-axle - PDW QR eyelet bits, SKS guards and some shoe laces (easier to adjust than zip ties, and kinder to carbon)

Oh and a Velcro patch under the fork crown bit

  • Shoelaces, velcro !
The s-works buyers on here will have a heart attack :)

  • Except those wearing the latest S-works Torch laceups

  • this actually sounds kinda brilliant?? how is the velcro holding up - I've not seen people using shoe laces but it it kinda makes a lot of sense?

  • The Velcro is holding up really well, the shoe laces could look tidier but perform flawlessly

  • Those rear stays could give you a nasty jab!

  • Genius

  • Kinesis Racelight 4s rimbrake ready for the winter

  • Lovely setup! Aren't you afraid of prematurely ruining the Oxic treatment on the rims riding through the winter slop?

  • Strange winter wheels!

  • Tks!
In all fairness, I've seen the coating on these wheels holding quite well during the winter...but I've also seen them wear out quickly with light use in the summer or drier periods (same country, same roads). I'll continue using them through the autumn and will most likely switch to a different set once there's salt on the roads.

    @kjlem Cool!

  • I’ve been using Ksyrium Exalith rims for almost 3 years now during winter. The rear has just lost its ‘ridged’ brake track, front still going strong. I think with a normal set of Ali rims I’d have gone through a couple of pairs at this point.

  • Same here, about 3 years also. Rear brake track is 80% back to alloy both sides. Worn through the exalith coating, looks a bit odd but i'm not to precious about it.
    Front still looks like new.

  • First ride of my Joe Waugh with new wheels - H Plus Son TB14s on Bitex hubs. Black paint already going after one ride but hey ho! Tried carbon pads but grits gonna grit I guess

  • First big ride on the new to me Giant contend. Ebay bargain I picked up in Norwich. Love it, but don't love it enough to clean it after today. Full guards with long flaps, still covered in shit.

Giant rgx bike specific guards rattled loose just once, need to tighten everything up. Minimal swearing involved to fit them mercifully. Bring on more winter cold crispy days!

  • I know you've just had one ride 😁 but would you recommend those guards?

I got a Contend AR recently (from Gt Yarmouth) and have been trying I work out whetjet to fit those or go for something else like bluebells.

  • @jdp I would! Easy to fit and picked them up reasonably cheap. 37mm wide for 32mm tyres.

Was looking at the Kinesis fend off guards as an alternative but the temptation of an easy fit was too strong. Didn't have to bodge anything other than a longer fork mount bracket to bring it closer to the tyre.

  • I've got one of these too - really nice ride. Perfect for mixture of road and pathways.

  • Does yours have the mechanical/hydro converter...? Ugly and abit annoying but managed to get the kit to add accessories.
Still fugly but at least now functional as can get my light & headunit mounted. Replaced it with a go pro mount for the light so it's at least a little less unsightly.

  • Thanks, the easy fit part was kind of swaying me too. Can I ask where you got them from please? I'll need to get the 45mm ones as I'm running 34mm tyres.

  • I lied when I said reasonably cheap, forgot i'd hit pay in 3 🤣 £50 from Westbrook cycles but that looks like the rrp. Still feel like it was worth it though given how easy it was to fit.

  • Cheers. £50 seems to be standard which was why I was looking at others guards but I think I'll just suck it up and get some.

  • No, I just got the frameset on here and built it up with regular hydro. Heard those things existed but never seen one before. Does it work well?

  • That's a beautiful bike. I would really be interested in the stem-compatible mount you used here to mount the GPS unit. Could you share the reference?
