He also mentions the 1st Duke of Wellington getting into The Lords on merit forgetting he was the son of the Earl of Mornington and had sufficient money to purchase his Army Commission (this was how you became an Officer at the time).
To get by to Lieutenant Colonel would have cost £750,000 in today’s money
