Glass in contact with the boiling water
Is that an important thing?
-
• #27728
Not for coffee directly, but with all the research/findings about plastic leeching into food/water especially at higher temperatures, I try and avoid it as much as possible (and most metal kettles will have a clear plastic window to show the fill volume)

Love my Lidl one. Shame about the lid - that’s one of the best bits!

I’m still waiting for a glass aeropress and clever dripper for this exact reason.
-
• #27731
I've settled for a metal funnel, and called it a day.
Also, for Clever Dripper related brewing, is there a reason why people don't just immersion brew in something else (mixing jug etc), and then pour through their filter of choice once the extraction is at the point you want?
-
• #27732
The filter will clog if you do that. The bed depth of the grounds is important to trap fines
-
• #27733
Ah, I use a cloth filter so I guess that's why I'm not seeing too much clogging
-
• #27734
Bargain for someone, would buy it if I didn't have one already!
-
• #27735
This sounds scary. I would be bracing for it to shatter. It would have to be really over engineered to gain my trust.
-
• #27736
If you’re pushing it hard you’re doing it wrong. If it’s made from borosilicate glass it’ll be absolutely fine.
Minor inconvenience to preheat, but better than plastic. -
• #27737
Yeah I mean I've used my glass KeepCup for years, quite a lot of that with an Aeropress, no issues here (also used a standard Ikea glass with an Aeropress with no issues)

Get a Hario Switch instead. Glass. Superior design anyway imo. Easier to mix both immersion and percolation by just flicking a switch instead of having to remove and replace the whole brewer from a cup.
-
• #27739
I like the look of the switch but they're a bit small aren't they? The beauty of the clever is I can just dump 500ml of water in there and forget about it. With the switch isn't the only way of doing 500ml is to do a hybrid pour over and immersion method? Then I might as well just do a normal pour over?

I am currently brewing 500ml as I write this message. It technically only holds 360ml but if you use a three pour technique - which is now my daily driver method - then it’s no big deal anyway. But I’m also using different water temperatures for my pours.
With 30g of coffee, I am doing two 90ml pours at 96° (for very light coffee) followed by a 320ml pour at 76°, so the 360ml capacity doesn’t matter.
The difference in this versus a v60 is that it’s so foolproof. I haven’t made a single average cup in a month of using it. Everything has been genuinely fantastic.
It also looks much nicer IMO.
I don’t particularly like the idea of boiling water being in contact with plastic for 4 minutes nowadays so this is much better for myself.
But if you already have a Clever, there's no reason to buy a Switch anyway.
-
• #27741
Yeah, I use the clever because it’s so straightforward and reliable without being a faff. And the 500ml capacity is very handy.
-
• #27742
Ah, I read 'I’m still waiting for a glass aeropress and clever dripper for this exact reason' as 'I do not yet have either of these because they don't make glass ones' hence the suggestion.
-
• #27743
Haha I get you. But alas I am waiting while just using the plastic versions.
-
• #27744
but if you use a three pour technique
Not a great start, the reason I switched from v60 to the clever was because of my toddlers grabbing at my leg and making it a nightmare.
But I’m also using different water temperatures for my pours.
Erm, definitely no.
It also looks much nicer IMO.
This is definitely true.
I don’t particularly like the idea of boiling water being in contact with plastic for 4 minutes nowadays so this is much better for myself.
I'm trying to reduce plastic use too, swapped all my tupperware to glass for example, but I don't think 2 mins in the dripper is a big problem.
Still might get one though.

Its funny how much kids are mentioned in this thread as a means to finding a more streamlined coffee routine.
I have made traditional V60s since getting the Switch and they are so average (still good but average by comparison) that I don't think I can go back to traditional pourover. Also being able to drink your coffee immediately due to the lower temperature third pour is a revelation.

Finding a more streamlined life in general.

That's relatively svelte! Thought it'd be a monster next to the Gaggia. Looks very tidy

Looks good - I’m not sure I’m gonna have room for that and the linea Micra

For anyone who missed the Lidl temperature control kettle, Lakeland now doing the same base with a slightly different lid configuration. Obviously it's not your fancy swan knecked pour over jobbie, but for £40 and Glass in contact with the boiling water, it's a pretty solid bet
