gotta say these people are a pretty unsmiling bunch...
Triathletes never smile until you get to ultra-distance level. Even then, I suspect they're not smiling so much as trying to suck bone marrow out of their jawbones for sustenance.

No really good pics but I did Bala tri last weekend which was fantastic, well worth a trip or a weekend away in north wales for next year.
Perfect swim in a lovely lake, good safety cover, cool clean water, great views when you took a breath! Started in 4 waves to spread us out nicely.
Bike was rolling not flat but fast, good on a tt bike, totally closed out and back course, again lovely views.
Run was then out and back on the closed road and pavement. Again nice views, good support at the turn in a campsite.
Wish I hadn’t rushed back and had stayed around for a paddle board and swim after.

I also did national relays the week before Bala which was fun, chaos, fast bike and run, chaotic swim due to last minute change to a tiny pond!
Would do again, would avoid drinking rum the night before.
Sadly a lad from our neighbour club Stockport tri died of a heart attack soon after being pulled out of the water. RIP. Apparently he hugged his team mate and smiled as he ran into the water so that’s not the worst way to go in my book and apparently the incident was well dealt with by the rescue boats, medics etc so hopefully all those involved weren’t too shaken. That aside I’d highly
Recommend this event as long as you aren’t in the men’s 40-50 open category

I’d add to this the guy at Bala who complained “50 people are waiting for 1 person to be rescued” as our wave waited to. Luckily a few others joined me in calling him a selfish c+++ and suggesting he wind his neck in a bit

wow that sounds horrific... I'm surprised they didnt stop the race after somebody died in the water?

I don’t think he died at the race, I think he felt unwell, was rescued, taken to hospital possibly having a heart attack and died later. Nobody we spoke to in the race was aware there had been an issue or had even seen anyone be rescued, though it was hard to see and very busy.
These things do happen in races unfortunately but it was good to know that all the precautions in place worked as well as they could. -

Did a half mara once and someone collapsed and died ahead of me near the finish. I came in the high 1.20s, and had no idea anything had happened until being told later - he must've been going very quickly and been rushed away to hospital extremely quickly. Which, I suppose, is good to know if you were to get into trouble.

Nobody tempted by new Ironman England? Bike might be a bit beefy heading into the dales from Leeds

anybody know why they used to do tri on 650c wheels front and back? Lopro with small front I can somehow see, but small front and back is a mystery to me....

I guess it was to get around the rear wheel hitting the straight seat tube on steel frames with the steeper angle used on Tri bikes without using really long stays before they started using curved tubes ? 650 was used until much more recently on smaller frames

Ah interesting, yea maybe. On the Orbit the angles look rather normal though.

Maybe it was just a trend back then. They clearly offered no overall benefit over 700c otherwise we'd still be riding them along with 26in MTB's as well. Gbj_tester will surely have a proper answer

Awful news coming from AG world champs
did do the bournemouth international tri standard distance this weekend. I know I was warned on here about the bike ride (along a two lane A road open to cars) but couldnt find an alternative race.
Went alright I think! Swim conditions were perfect, water calm and clear. After that things stayed wet in constant rain. The bare foot run up the hill to the transition zone was interesting, and so was sharing a motorway with cars going 70 mph but then again I knew what I was getting myself into! My bike and cycling legs are far from competitive but that too was no surprise.
Happy that I made it through my first standard distance! But gotta say these people are a pretty unsmiling bunch... Maybe it was the rain and general grayscale of the scene?
