  • Is that just one 30l bag then?
Actually looking at the site again I think it takes a single bag rather than one either side.

  • Classic Ortlieb back roller, 20L, might accomodate a 16 inch laptop, you'll want a decent case as there is no padding.

  • Yeah I have a pretty good padded case for the MacBook, just wondering whether I'd fit the laptop, shoes and clothes into one 20l back roller.

I'll dig out my back roller and load in a 15" laptop, shoes and a few items later..

Laptop is 33cm wide and does stick up a little, otherwise ample room still with shoes, jeans, shirt and a small down jacket.. it does start to get a bit heavy on one side.

  • Thanks, that’s helpful. Maybe I need to get two bags to spread the weight

  • I’ve been commuting with a Carradice Super C shopper pannier. Pretty cavernous and will easily swallow what you need. Looks aren’t for everyone.

  • How long is your commute?

I only have one pannier. Admittedly it's been a while since it's been used, but I never found the poor weight distribution mattered riding to work with a lock, lunch, water and a top. Which is probably at least a MBP and clothes in weight(?).

If you're doing serious miles with a lot of weight I can see why you'd want even distribution. But for a ride to work I'd just chuck it all in one. Carrying two bags is more than double the hassle of one.

Just put the bag on your first foot down side.

As @hugo7 points out, it depends on the commute, I should have added my weight concerns are for 16 miles each way.

As it turns out, my laptop (without case) does fit into a smaller Ortlieb, it just protrudes which is fine and this is how I've ridden it a few times.

These are the Gravel panniers (with laptop inside), you could look at these or the Sport rollers if you wanted to balance things out with a pair.

  • Commute is only about 8 miles so maybe just using one would be fine.

  • Yeah I have a pretty good padded case for the MacBook, just wondering whether I'd fit the laptop, shoes and clothes into one 20l back roller.

No definitely not comfortably. Maybe a 11 inch iPad. Use two panniers. It's not worth even thinking about. There's enough to worry about when commuting especially in the colder months. You want some wiggle room when packing.

    The gravel packs are nice.

I use the roller and the gravel packs on a daily basis. Roller are much easier to open and close and - although the gravel are great and lighter - I consider the rollers to be marginally superior because of ease of closing.

  • Anyone got any tips for helping with cable rub on vx-21 bags? I thought maybe using some rapha or Albion fabric repair patches I have, but thinking iron might not be ideal for the fabric...

Could just use sticky back velcro (the soft side) or something?

  • Send to Scottish Mountain Gear if it needs a repair - otherwise keep using it

Edit - these are also really handy

  • What's the size of those gravel ortliebs?

I am looking for something that will fit my laptop (25cm x 34cm in its case), and be compatible with a spesh pizza rack.

They are true to size (25cm x 37cm) and very square, so that should fit snuggly in there but it's very close, welcome to borrow one if in SW or central London.

  • Thanks! I work near Condor and they stock them so I will just nip in and have look. Helpful to know if might not be a wasted journey :)

  • You can buy sail repair tape, which I've heard is great for bag repairs. It should stick well and is waterproof. I think xpac was initially designed for use as sail material. You can buy long rolls of spinnaker tape, which is probably more cost effective too. Report back if you do use it!

  • Ah perfect, thanks

  • So I used an Ortlieb Quick Rack on a recent long distance off road trip.

There are no eyelets/ mounts on the rear of my bike so I fitted the aftermarket option from Ortlieb which bands on a mount for each stay to locate the rack.

It didn't last very long and I had to bodge with cable ties once the thin aluminium strips snapped under the constant abuse.

Anyway...I don't like rear seatpacks not least because I like my dropper post. I'm looking at an Old Man Mountain Divide rack and thru bolt kit. It's some way north of £200 and I'm having issues parting with the cash. 🤦

  • Anyone used a bumper bar with a Zeitgeist, or Wizard Works, Carradice etc?

Thinking of getting one for cables etc, but worried it might push bag forward to far.

Photos would be ideal if anyone is using one?

  • The Restrap bumper bar is heavy AF. What about one of these.

Heard mixed reviews and seemed a faff, had a bunch of foam spacers about so do this instead.

  • Thanks both, I've gone foam spacers as above, I found two moves the bag sufficiently far forward.

    👍
