If you had to build something like this, what would be the best way to fix the shelves? This one looks to be glue and nails. Outside will be hidden, so doesn't need to be pretty there. Will be similar scale but mainly for trinkets and maybe couple of small plants.

Some sort of metal bracket if the load is fairly light.

I don't think the plank form for the sides is great, it may be easier as a frame

How will the outside be hidden? Looks like the whole point is that they're freestanding, just curious where you're going to use them.
Personally I think they'd look nice if the shelves jointed into the sides although that's a lot of angled cuts.

It'll be going in an alcove and needs to hide the inside, but not the back of the alcove if that makes sense? By jointed do you mean something like this?

Glue and screws will be totally fine, wouldn't even need the glue if you do the correct screws well

The screw bit on your drill I find kills the screw more than crap screws.

I'd still go for the as and when needed specific screws as apposed to the multi packs - screw technology is great (not so much the self piloting nonsense) . the thought of buying more or specialist while having unused packs seems defeating

Thanks for all the feedback re: the lawn on concrete. I’d got as far as knowing we’d need digger hire and skips, and access is solved already.

We want a lawn as every other part of the grounds is either terraced or allotment, so we’d love somewhere for the sprig to play with a ball or run around.

Also would need to figure out what to do with the 6m wall at one end. How high can ivy grow?

I'd rather have redundancy in supply stock at home than buy product, then have to spend half a day sourcing as few as 2x screws to replace those cheese ones supplied with it.

Possibly, hand drivers have the same effect though from recent experience.

It's odd as when I was younger these problems didn't seem to arise so often. The problem is likely me rather than the products / tools and I'm separately looking for a tradesperson teacher willing to teach via a few jobs around the house, I'd gladly pay for that versus chucking additional money at the problem any time anything needs doing.

I have to do a fair bit of this kind of thing but I can't carry lots of different types and sizes. I've come down to a few sizes that cover a lot of situations. I get Hospa screws from Hafele but they're available all over.

I binned every rusty inherited screw and bought packs of 5x 30mm, 40mm, 50mm and 60mm screws from Screwfix. As well as duo plugs in x 30mm and 50mm.

They've covered 99% of all my jobs since and I will not go back.

I almost use 5x50 for most things I do and if it’s not screws I use a toggle

tbf I've binned all my screws and just use ct1

I bought these M8 inserts, 10.5mm OD with the plan of putting them into the edge of a an 18mm MFC panel, but now I'm doubting my ability to not blow out the edge of the board. Needs to go about 22mm deep. What do we think my chances are of a cheapo dowel jig being accurate enough over that kind of distance?

Maybe go surface mounted bracket instead? They could be hidden.

It looks like a foot or stop? 3mm either side is doable (but will the edge poke out?), but it there allowance to add a base for the insert?

Sorry yeah, that's the inset and the foot, to fine tune the height as it'll act as support to a desk top. Plan is to drill and epoxy the inset, but yeah, only 3.5mm clearance either side. Insert is 18mm wide too so should be fairly well hidden.

I'm squinting as it's a nice bit of kit that just replaces a torn off bit of card, a more standard foot floor protector with the a spacer or washers packing it could do the job (be less of a fret), or leather glued and layered

After 7 years of looking for a Sunray/Sunburst garden gate for our 1930s house, I finally won one on eBay. Picked it up today after driving to Hammersmith. It's spot on.
Will need to be stripped back and painted but that can wait till spring.
Can't wait to hang it!
