being able to do something for yourself, rather than have it done to you is always a positive movement
Whether to reject the parent or to reclaim agency in your own liberation by rejecting the white abolitionist, decoupling from Cassius Clay might be a positive step. To then deliberately associate with the Nation of Islam just looks like two steps back.

I'm not sure it's fair to apply that sort of logic to any religious cult.

choosing a name which associates you with a racial separatist movement
The name didn't do that, though. Attending Nation of Islam rallies did.

I mean, according to wiki. I just know that using Cassius Clay when you mean Muhammad Ali is a bit of a weird vibe.
But, I don't mind Stephen Yaxley-Lennon's name being stated instead. -

Um, memes thread. I wanted to present the descriptions of of 1-3 in a superficially authoritative form to make 4 a punchier punch line 🙂

Chipper was a cool little bike tho', the Tomahawk was the next model up. My cousins had one, I had a Tempest, which I hated.

One of the plus points of the Boxer over the Striker were the plastic mudguards (over the Strika's metallic ones), which could be folded under to rub against the tyres and make cool motorbike noises. This only lasted a day or two, after which the ends of the mudgards were worn through, and parents got involved.

Makes total sense to me. Christianity, and Christian names were imposed by slavers and if you have that history you would want to totally reject it and replace it with something else. You can argue with the logic of joining the Nation of Islam but the symbolism is powerful.

That's what I'm arguing. I can perfectly well understand the rejection of Europeanisation and Christianity, but Islamic imperial entities seem to have used the identical process (conquer, enslave, pacify by compelled conversion) in Africa as Western Europe used in Africa and the Americas, and the Russian Empire used in Siberia and the far East.
the symbolism is powerful
To me, it symbolises jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire
I think being able to do something for yourself, rather than have it done to you is always a positive movement. I don't know about his views on his father, but plenty of people want to start again on their own terms. More power to them.
