I think you'd want to measure it to the ideal length, trim the stays then re-bash the flats, drill, spray.
Ideally you'd anneal it first to make it soft so you could create the flats with a vise/similar.
^that's if it was wildly out. You could probably do most with some light bending of the brake hole attachment and main vertical to horizontal bend.
