Should be possible clearance wise I think,
Are you sure? 2.8" is quite big. My 29er inbred only clears 2.25 in the rear.
EDIT: I got curious and utilised the way back machine. I am not sure if this is the exact frame you have. This is about the 2005 geared 26" inbred:
For that reason, it has HUGE tyre clearance. We've fitted up to 2.7in tyres with clearance. That's good.
