  • Nonse sense.

  • To say ah well it’s this idiot’s belief system therefore we must give it as much credence as peer-reviewed science

    @hugo7 didn't say that.

    Intelligent Design is a falsehood

In itself, it's an idea with no credible evidence and no practical use (unless someone thinks praying is practical). Calling it a falsehood requires proving there's no God, for one thing, which is a bit tricky. It's the act of presenting it as having equal use and value to scientific theories that is worthless. If this all sounds like hair splitting, rational debate and intellectual rigour are the topic, here.

one side is out and out lying

One part of the multidimensional space that is people's views on various axes is where most of this shit is ending up, even if it often doesn't start there. E.g. the "wellness" industry steadily morphing into ethnofascism.

  • Intelligent Design is a falsehood. To say ah well it’s this idiot’s belief system therefore we must give it as much credence as peer-reviewed science and have a debate is patronising the idiot and damaging scientific study.

I think Intelligent Design as a political movement and belief in a teleological guiding force behind evolution are not easily distinguishable to people not steeped in the debate, so might want to nuance your points slightly, unless your intention is to assert that anyone who believes in some form of creator God (within or without evolution as we currently understand it) is an idiot in which case I have nothing further to say

  • Intelligent design is pretty much debunked by the fact that the eye is actually very badly designed and testicles hanging out on the out side are a bad idea. There's nothing intelligent about it.

  • Intelligent design only came about because of the Theory of Evolution and the stack load of evidence that was discovered to support it.

It was deliberately conjured up to try to combat the science.

  • There are plenty of people out there who share some of my views (just not on intellectual debate) who I'd hate to have arguing a case I agree with.

  • Anyway, you've got fools who believe in nonsense like intelligent design, they're not some kind of enemy per se, they may well be very decent people otherwise who are able to discuss all sorts with you, they may well be idiot arseholes. The liars are the definite arseholes who couldn't give a shit about things like intelligent design or whatever other nonsense, but latch onto those points and exploit the people who do. They'll gladly lie about what they believe to endear themselves to certain people, then lie about anything else to grift their way to power and money. Happens with US (and other) politicians, evangelical pastors, cult leaders and radicalising arseholes of many types all across the globe. Discussing things with them is difficult because they don't believe what they're saying but have to say it to gain or keep sway over people who do.

  • This is Trump to a T.

He's not a Christian, let alone evangelical, but has latched on to their causes to win votes. He's not anti-abortion either.

The argument from design, which owing to the many variations is really a family of arguments, has been around for a lot longer.

'Intelligent design' is just a newish name.

  • He's not a Christian, let alone evangelical, but has latched on to their causes to win votes. He's not anti-abortion either.

All true, and he's openly said he's not a Christian, and has never had any truck with any so-called Christian 'virtues', but when you hear the evangelical lot talking, they'll argue all day long that he's a God-fearing paragon of holy righteousness. That, to me, is the most telling form of dishonesty in this - that they'll lie or otherwise wilfully obscure the truth (which is also a lie of sorts, and a breach of one of their commandments) to support him as long as he beats up the people they want him to beat up.

Which says a lot for what Christians actually are.

I'd have liked to see Harris refer in the debate to 'the women who've had your abortions' and really trigger the fucker.

  • Crikey o reilly. That debate. PHEW.

  • I'd have liked to see Harris refer in the debate to 'the women who've had your abortions' and really trigger the fucker.

Oof! That would be a dickpunch. "So Mr Trump, how many women do you think have had abortions as a result of your extramarital infidelity?"

  • Eh. American Evangelicalism is a very different beast to Christianity in many other parts of the world (or even many other parts of the country, even amongst card carrying conservative figures). Tarring the entire religion with one particular brush is to overstate the position slightly I think.

  • Agreed.

Has a strong "all Muslims are terrorists" whif to it.

  • Yes of course Trump's banging Loomer
    🤮🤮🤮

  • Are we supposed tto feel bad for her, or bad for him?

    Or bad for us?

  • He's not anti-abortion either.

I recall one of the big stories in the first Trump campaign was that he had paid someone to have an abortion. In the debate this week he refused to answer if he’d ever been involved in an abortion (which, to be fair, is legitimate on privacy grounds for his partner, not that he gives af about that). The odds are high that he’s knocked someone up at some point.

Well... Sure, you can point to all kinds of flaws which wouldn't exist if each species was designed from scratch. Hair in your bum crack. But I've always felt a bit suss about the assertion that evolution is merely selection acting on random variation over deep time; despite the ridiculous amounts of time involved it still doesn't seem like enough to explain what we see around us, particularly symbioses and stuff.

And sure enough, in recent years Lamarck's reputation is beginning to recover; the inheritance of acquired characteristics is no longer off the table. But even that may be insufficient to explain the actual miracle of life, and perhaps it'll turn out that the hallucinating hippies are on the money when they say stuff about evolution having intent because the whole universe is intelligent...

  • in recent years Lamarck's reputation is beginning to recover

Sure, Amstell was much better, but his time is probably unjustly forgotten.

  • Trump really is a petulant bully. Having been mocked for saying Haitians are eating dogs in Springfield he is now proposing mass deportations from Springfield as revenge for his loss of face.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3wp6q132p2o

But for some brain rot reason he has said he is going to send them back to Venezuela. He is a despicable cunt.

  • On Friday, three schools in Springfield were evacuated due to bomb threats. At least one of the threats made disparaging comments about Haitians, according to Springfield Mayor Bob Rue.

It comes after city hall and several other buildings, as well as one school, were evacuated on Thursday due to threats.

  • This gives a bit more background on Project 2025:

Yes; but equally, is anyone surprised and do we even need to say it any more?
