did do the bournemouth international tri standard distance this weekend. I know I was warned on here about the bike ride (along a two lane A road open to cars) but couldnt find an alternative race.
Went alright I think! Swim conditions were perfect, water calm and clear. After that things stayed wet in constant rain. The bare foot run up the hill to the transition zone was interesting, and so was sharing a motorway with cars going 70 mph but then again I knew what I was getting myself into! My bike and cycling legs are far from competitive but that too was no surprise.
Happy that I made it through my first standard distance! But gotta say these people are a pretty unsmiling bunch... Maybe it was the rain and general grayscale of the scene?

Triathletes never smile until you get to ultra-distance level. Even then, I suspect they're not smiling so much as trying to suck bone marrow out of their jawbones for sustenance.
I’d add to this the guy at Bala who complained “50 people are waiting for 1 person to be rescued” as our wave waited to. Luckily a few others joined me in calling him a selfish c+++ and suggesting he wind his neck in a bit
