The gravel bit can be avoided by going up to Medstead, but its a really nice woods so unless its really muddy I'd keep it in.
Likewise in New Arlesford you can just stay on the main road, but you miss the nice bit by the watercress, the fun ford and the river you can dip your feet in. Also, turn left after crossing the ford under the Bypass to Tichborne to an absolutley fantastic pub called the 'Tichborne Arms'. They have an absolutely beautiful garden out the back, and do really good food.
