  • I'm not informed enough to know what my opinion on Ben O'Connor's Vuelta should be.

He's a supposed GT contender who's had a lead that should have been unassailable but he's lost it.

Should he have been able to hold it?

    Is Roglic too good?

Do Ag2R not have the team to support him?

Or was he never likely to hold his lead and will he eventually be happy with a (likely) podium finish?

I've seen him earn a lot of praise for his resilience, but is this the best he could have done?

  • His best finish in a GT so far has been 4th (at the 2021 Tour and this year's Giro), so I think he'll be very happy if he holds on to a podium place.

The Vuelta has a specific parcours that probably doesn't suit someone like O'Connor who is more suited to longer, less steep climbs. Roglic, on the other hand, is ideally suited to a course like this.

I think if you ask O'Connor before the race if he'd sign up for a stage win and a podium place, he'd have done so on the spot. So in that sense, assuming he holds on to that podium spot, his race has been a big success.
