The Vuelta seems to have been so good this year. I've only been watching it on the short Eurosport highlights on YouTube but it's got small teams with good back stories winning, a plucky hero doing well to prolong the misery of losing the race from a really advantageous position, Soler turning UAE into Movistar, loads of breakaway wins.
It's definitely the cool younger brother of the GTs that have started to settle down and talk about mortgages.

Ef forced the issue getting the initial gap then other mid pack gc teams helped.
Regardless, disaster for Landa and so stupid to pull cattaneo when he was up the road 10 minutes.

Yeah it's been great. As Roglic normally has a crash and/or one bad day in him per GT, it still feels very open.
-
• #51361
He crashes, on average, once every 18 race days. Stage 19 tomorrow.

Just watched La Vuelta highlights - well done to Roglic , tough luck for O’Conner …. but good on him for staying in the leaders jersey for so long ..
Pogacar would have walked this even with the Giro and the Tour in his legs - shame….
and do Kirby and McEwan practice talking utter , utter fucking shite ? -

I'm not informed enough to know what my opinion on Ben O'Connor's Vuelta should be.
He's a supposed GT contender who's had a lead that should have been unassailable but he's lost it.
Should he have been able to hold it?
Is Roglic too good?
Do Ag2R not have the team to support him?
Or was he never likely to hold his lead and will he eventually be happy with a (likely) podium finish?
I've seen him earn a lot of praise for his resilience, but is this the best he could have done?

His best finish in a GT so far has been 4th (at the 2021 Tour and this year's Giro), so I think he'll be very happy if he holds on to a podium place.
The Vuelta has a specific parcours that probably doesn't suit someone like O'Connor who is more suited to longer, less steep climbs. Roglic, on the other hand, is ideally suited to a course like this.
I think if you ask O'Connor before the race if he'd sign up for a stage win and a podium place, he'd have done so on the spot. So in that sense, assuming he holds on to that podium spot, his race has been a big success.

I think Mas is most likely to end up in second. For the fourth time. Which goes to prove, again, that being able to get second in a Grand Tour does not mean you will one day be able to get first.

I enjoyed McKewan’s description of O’Connor going into the red as he’s going out of the red jersey. Schrödinger’s rider
-
• #51373
I did not enjoy Kirby’s “King Roglic…the 4th” as he crossed the line. Idiotic.
-
• #51374
I did not enjoy Kirby
Correct.
