  • Are the hinges external and opens putward? I've been discussing hinges, and security, with a carpenter making my doors as I want external opening

  • New Thomas Crapper toilet arrived for the smallest toilet light makeover. Surprising amount of things needed for a toilet room. (roll holder, spare roll holder, toilet brush etc).

  • External, opening outward. For me anyway it's glass and can be smashed if someone really wants in.

  • This is what I thought too, or locked bumpee and the best defence is an alarm.

Please can you post a photo of the hinge type?

  • I will when the door has a handle fitted and I can open it, for sure.

some progress with pantry and kitchen today...

  • For our light toilet refresh, I wanted to put some picture rail back in as I've seen other houses in the street with it and liked it. It's very similar to the door architrave but has a larger flat bit and a rebate of sorts for the hooks to hang. I didn't have any as pretty much all original features had been stripped from our house but managed to snag a small amount from a kind family on the street. Took it to Champion Timber in Bromley who machined up 10m for me. Pretty good match.
I've had them make some skirting and stair spindles for me before and they're the dons at this sort of stuff.

  • You are @/Dammit AICMFP

  • Don’t think the Carbon footprint even comes close.

  • more on the Klar windows/doors - all the builders here are mega impressed with the weight/sturdiness/construction of them. Say they've not really seen much like that before.

  • Would love to see some detailed pics when you get a chance.

Wallet-friendly Velfac alternative. Do they do custom RAL colours if you ask nicely/pay more?

  • Do you have a link for them? I've Googled but just found a company from Connecticut, is there a UK stockist or have I found the wrong company?

  • will def get some proper pics up. They only do 3 colours sadly - black, white, gray.

    @tbc - https://klarhome.com/

  • Thanks. I was hoping they'd do bifolds but looks a great place for windows.

Where's good for non golf club bifolds?

  • Origin? They do their own in house powder coating

  • Ah, I meant Klar seems like a cheaper Velfac alternative.

  • Are you wedded to the idea of bifolds? They often become draughty quite quickly unless you regularly replace the seals and adjust the sashes.

Compression seals on casement/French doors (or Velfac/IdealCombi style sliders) work much better.

  • Bathroom renovation starts today. Probably about two weeks as we're taking down / moving a wall + adding a pocket door.

    Can't wait.

  • We've been thinking about re-doing our garden and replacing the existing 'log cabin' with something more fit for purpose as I work from home. Having purpose built storage indoors has been great so that would be something we'd want in the garden and a better cooking/dining setup. Also need it to be a little more child friendly and low maintenance as currently it's fairly mature and I cba with some of the upkeeep. It's a reasonable size garden at about 18m x 22m. I have been getting some quotes and it would seem much like building prices gardens are also pretty expensive! That said I think we will get on with it and feels like something we might be able to stage out to help a little with the cost...

  • One thing I'd say is once you remove mature established plants they're gone. Obviously for a cost you can buy mature plants, but the existing ones will be there because they do well.

If it's maintaince, have you thought about a gardener?

One of our friends have an established garden and they're not really into gardening so have a gardener who does the work. At a lower end of the scale our neighbours, who do bits of gardening, have someone who comes and does their hedges and a bit of pruning.

From that your garden made perfect show a common theme I noticed was only 10% of the budget went on plants. If you're doing what basically amounts to building work then it = building costs. Maybe pm Colin The Bald (Idk whether the underscore or joined up is the right one).

  • I'd also think about how old your kid is now (and future kids) and how they'll actually use the garden as time goes on.

We have 4 & 6yo and in the garden have:

    • Wendy House
    • Mud kitchen
    • Tap
    • Den
    • sandpit
    • popup tents and tunnels (stored)

Mud kitchen as a staging area for imaginative play has prob had the most play out of anything across all the ages. The Wendy House also gets a decent amount of time, but much more going in and out and the slide has been a novelty rather than a feature. And overall less impact than I thought. I wonder if something big enough for 2 kids to sit and do drawing would be the ideal.

All that to say, don't over thing the kid aspect. Some sort of activity area in a rough sightline and not in full sun all day is all you need.

With some imagination you can make it not look unattractive.

  • Day one done.

  • Wow, if you're thinking about losing the stud walls at all, you'd be getting so much more space for activities!

  • That stud wall on the right of the shower is going as we’re squaring out the room. The two on either side of the window are staying (the one by the bath may go).

  • slight issue with diykitchens

Their 3d preview/render of the kitchen showed the island end panel being the correct colour. The island end panel they sent is another. They say it's my fault for not checking the final text of the order. I feel I was a bit misled by their software showing one thing but their order showing another.

Do i have a case that I shouldn't have to pay for a replacement?
