They are cheaper but having watched far too many youtube train experience review videos (never knew such things existed) it seems the refurbished Avanti trains while being more expensive the journey times are a lot shorter especially as i’m closer to Euston/Kings-X.
you can buy an overpriced GnT on them too.if i book using the app i can change to next available service for a fee.

Oh yeah, the new Avanti trains are lovely if you've got the cash. Super quick too.

And so it is, I find myself at New Street with time on my hands, caffeine thirst to slake, and an early payday. Guide me to artisanal delights.

Edit: Stumbled across Yorks. Looked OK. Was pleasantly caffeinated and fed. Onwards.

Just got a start on HS2 and will be using the Erskine Street B7 site entrance. I get £60 per night accommodation allowance and will be there for 12 months minimum.
Any recommendations for digs/areas to check? I'll be using public transport (walking would be ideal) and prioritise a good nights kip over a bangin' night out.
Being long-term and I will be working most weekends, self-catering would be ideal.
TIA

Bike polo is south Birmingham, so I guess you'll want to be near that ...

No: nearest station to site is Duddleston, which is NE of city centre. So anywhere near a station and around 30 mins away would suit.
Unless that was a joke, in which case it's gone over my head.

It was a bit of a joke, it depends how much you want to play polo!
I think duddeston is on the cross city line so south of there for leafy green hipsterz ( south Birmingham) or north for leafy green posh people (Sutton) -

I see: no, I won't be playing polo.
So you're recommending I check South Birmingham, but avoid Sutton?

Sutton is a Tory safe seat, so that probably tells you all you need to know.
Stirchly (via Bounville station) and Cotteridge (via Kings Norton station) are both about 25mins on the train from Duddeston. Stirchley has a few craft breweries and feted restaurants, but accommodation is getting expensive due to its reputation. Cotteridge is just up the road and cheaper.

Thank you, that's very useful!
Exactly the sort of local knowledge I was hoping for.

Another shout out for Cotteridge and Bournville. I used to live on Beaumont Road in Bournville which was a cockstride from the station and a very short train journey into the city centre. Selly Oak as well is n the train line but very studenty.
Sutton may price you out, it's very posh. Green street signs with white writing

Sutton’s more new money golf club vibes than posh. If you like riding gravel don’t discount it cos having Sutton park on your doorstop could be a game changer.

Thanks!
And I'll be making an effort to use "cockstride" in conversation.
