Don't try to understand it, the hi-fi world is so full of nonsense. I thought I'd seen it all but when I first moved to France I was looking locally for some xlr cables when I found this place...
6 grand usb cable for the cleanest of 1's and 0's

To bring this thread back to topic though, I can taste a major difference between my 50€ hand grinder and my Philos. Lol
Although I'm still dialling in cold brew (it's a bummer that one batch always takes so long!), it's already miles better than anything I had with my old Timemore

In all honesty though, I also don't think I would taste a difference between similar level grinders (yet). Maybe back-to-back but not if there are days in between.
But considering how many times I've read people faffing with alignment, static, retention and what not with some grinders, I'm really glad that the Philos basically doesn't have any of that. And that's probably the biggest selling point of it.

Someone’s ballin out of control.
I couldn’t justify one niche let alone two

I was going to sell the Zero, but then couldn’t tell the difference between it and the Duo so kept it to try side by side to see if I was going mad, then ended up changing the Duo to the filter burrs when I concluded that I really couldn’t tell the difference between the two for espresso.
I’m hooding that the Philos can do both filter and espresso, and in a way that I can tell a difference to the Niche pair. All of these grinders use Mazzer burrs however so it’s going to be interesting!

I had contemplated the niche duo but it appeared it wasn’t significantly different to the zero in flavour profile if the internet reviews were true. The Philos by most accounts gives a more typical flat burr separated flavour.
I do get the impression there is nothing to go wrong with the Philos, though the niche zero has been pretty much flawless it’s the longevity of things like the plastic lid and anti popcorn disc that give me cause for concern.

Just pulled a 18:37g shot in about 25s or so with some mid-light roasted Burundian coffee (ignore the bag in the pic that I had just finished) and for some reason that seems to have none of the usual fruit flavours I’m used to from coffee beans from that region, and was thinking of lowering the grind further. Does anyone do/like turbo espressos? Generally try to shoot for 1:2 in 30s but wondering if it’s worth branching out into different ratios and timings.

Filtered Moccamaster / Aarke filler done. Is good. Just don’t tell building control about the sockets right under it

I’ve got a prefect little setup where I could easily have a small tap on the back wall of this niche to fill the MM, Arke and kettle. Just have to get around to doing it

I think technically the zones are based around basins/containers rather than taps. But I cba grabbing the regs (all of 3 ft away from me) to check.

Another shout out to Yellow Bourbon. They accidentally sent me a 250g bag, rather than the 1kg I'd ordered. Immediately sent out a full kilo and refused to let me pay for the extra 250g. Best in the biz.
