  • Any recommendations for somewhere to go for lunch this Friday? Central/North, not too fussed on cuisine, £100 for two people (or of course cheaper) all in. Cheers

  • Tamil Prince or Crown

  • Cheers, they're possibles. Any recommendation for one over the other?

  • Both been great tbh. The upstairs dining room of the Crown is particularly nice.

  • I do not rate Tamil Prince. Overpriced.

  • I've just been and thought it was good enough to go back. Compared to Dishoom (which I would consider overpriced), feels like better quality for about the same price or less. Though I didn't go there when particularly hungry and admittedly portion sizes were not large, but things tasted good.

  • A massive dredge on this but I just delivered a box of merch over to him if you want to support his sausage endeavour. He's slowly spinning up sausages by post too, but no idea when he'll actually get it going.

  • Need a cheap eat rec for someone visiting Pimlico please. A nice pub could work. I have recommended Regency cafe already.

  • Ooh I went to his sausage place in Frome with @Alb

    Did enjoy.

  • Can you remember what the silly sausage was? He’s had some bangers

  • It’s more Victoria but 43 Szechuan kitchen is great
    Dellizie d’italia is nearby too
Neither of those are a pub mind!

  • Cask is a good pub with decent (but central London priced) burgers.

  • I try and support his sausage endeavour by purchasing a sausage any time I’m swinging by the station! Would be interested in merch tho… are you at liberty to say what you delivered for him?

  • An alternative suggestion is to jump across the river to Vauxhall for Italo / Bonnington Cafe.

(I just found out BC reopened. A nice surprise.)

  • T-shirts, gently silly, not loads of them, bit niche.

He’s out of office until term time I think, so I expect he’ll start trying to sell them in Sept.

  • Fish, SE Greenwich>Blackheath>Deptford>Rotherhithe

    £80 for two

Any gems, or failing that just decent?

  • Sunday roast in New Forest?

  • Sharkbait & Swim, Deptford Market Yard, might fit the bill. Only been once, but liked it

    https://www.sharkbaitandswim.com/

  • Thank you. Went down a treat.

Thinking back they forgot to serve a dish but still charged for it. Genuine error I believe and I should have been paying more attention.

Mackerel pate was a banger, whitebait decent. Mackerel fillets were something else. Seaweed chips a bit meh, but decent enough and very good dunked in the pate.

  • Possibly going to Porto end of October - any suggestions food wise? Anything goes really i.e breakfast, lunch, dinner etc

  • It's a long time since I went to Porto, but resist the encouragement to try tripe* as, whatever they tell you about how good it is, it's still tripe.

*apparently during some colonial wars they were sending the good meat to feed the soldiers so the locals resorted to eating tripe and it become a speciality of the city.

  • We ate at an excellent little restaurant that specialised in tinned fish etc. It was unplanned and we got a table from a no-show, but its not saved in my google maps so I'll have to ask my other half if she can remember. We also had dinner at Boa Bao which was good, but not so good I would rush back if I was there again.

There is a Time Out style food market on the other side of the river near the port houses, which is good for an easy lunch option if you do any port tasting.

You will get recommend a Franceshina at some point (an enourmous hot sandwich filled with meats and cheese, served hot in a dish covered in grazy with an egg on top). It was good but very heavy... if you fancy trying one I'd suggest sharing one if you can.

Slight tangent but we were recommended the parque das virtudes as a good spot to take a bottle of wine and watch sunset before dinner.

Edit: I found it. We went to Tabua Rasa which I really enjoyed.

  • I'm going on Thursday, will report back!

  • We had a few days there at the end of last year, staying on R. das Flores – had evening drinks a couple of times in Taberna do Largo - https://www.instagram.com/tabernadolargoporto/, and found a good selection of beers in Cervejaria Cask Beer (https://www.caskbeer.pt/ currently under maintenance)

Food – the two that stood out after evening meals were probably Intrigo - https://portotogether.com/directory/restaurants/restaurante-intrigo/ (https://intrigo.pt seems to be down or misconfigured) – very tucked away, with a terrace looking over the river, and Cantinho da Avo Regina (https://www.thefork.pt/restaurante/cantinho-da-avo-regina-r802815 - don’t think it has its own website) – fish grilled on the street, super-friendly service from one guy who seemed run off his feet, and clearly divides opinion among reviewers. It was a bit slapdash, but we liked it anyway.
