  • Spent ages looking in the book to identify something in Titchwell Marsh that I couldn't figure out. Then caught a glimpse of a page near the back in the rarities section. Turns out it was a Black Winged Stilt. An escapee, apparently.

  • Yes. Saw a lot of shags on Scilly and they're a bit smaller

  • Are you sure it's an escapee? They have bred in the UK in recent years

  • A eagle - we watched it having a go at an osprey before I decided to try and take a pic.

  • That's what someone I asked about it said. Apparently it has an avicultural ring?

  • Interesting, didn't realise they are kept in collections but like someone in that thread said, it never fails to surprise what private collectors keep

  • Hope none of you were fans of the kingfisher at Walthamstow wetlands

  • bit gutted for the kingfisher - but a peregrine falcon in walthamstow?!

  • We get the odd peregrine in Peckham

  • Birds gotta eat.

Can't believe they are closer to parrots than eagles.

  • closer to parrots than eagles

well I did not know this until today, excellent nugget of knowledge, thanks

  • Great day out at Snettisham. Loads to see and a great vista over The Wash. Spoonbills, egrets, a kingfisher, peregrine, buzzards, oystercatchers, dunlin, linnets, at least 40 cormorants, lapwings, many geese, muntjack, and those were just the ones I could recognise. Huge murmurations as well.
When the tide is out you really need some stronger lenses than we had.

  • Down at my folks on edge of the Romney marsh, 3 buzzards low over a field being harvested waiting for the rabbit casualties.
And a pied flycatcher on the birdcall app but no visual confirmation.

  • Why are buzzards being harvested?

  • Escapee Stilt

  • They're typically ripe by the 1st of September.

  • That’s when the season starts

  • I saw a lapwing today, I still don't know lots of birds by sight so I had to look it up but it was nice to see it.

Port Meadow is great for an introduction to recognising wading birds, it was a common sandpiper the other day.

  • lapwing

    Always look cheeky

  • Hobby and linnet the highlight on this weekends visit to the folks, got a decent visual on the hobby so hopefully a bit better at identifying them now.
No visual on the linnet just the call on the app.
Was busy harvesting blackberries so not hanging around to see a small bird.
Shit loads of red admirals too

  • Another visit to ‘home’ and sat on a place called chapel bank where the village disappeared and they moved the church down the hill so it’s just trees and gravestones, 5 buzzard and 1 kite sitting in the thermals and what I thought was a raven being given some aggro.
Confirmed it’s crowing on the app which was a different sound to a cronk but definitely not a crow.
Never knew they were here on the edge of the Romney marsh.
Wish I had bought my binoculars with me.
Edit: and a hobby bothering the swallows plus Raven again not getting on with crows.
Probably the most bird action in a hours walk this year.
