• Had an Octopus Home Mini delivered yesterday after our IHD was blown up by a power surge and I'm really impressed.

It's tiny, pink and super easy to setup (plug it in, scan a bar code on your phone, give it your WiFi password) and it works with the Home Assistant Octopus integration, so I can now check energy usage and cost from my Home Assistant dashboard and automate all the things. Only minor gripe is the live usage updates every minute when an IHD or Home Pro update in real time.

The Home Assistant integration knows if there's a saving sesh going on and if it's a greener day (but not if there's free electricity yet, as far as I can see). You can also display stuff like how many Octopoints you've got, if you've got any spins of the wheel left etc. but you end up with a LOT of visible entities so I've hidden these. They're still there behind the scenes though, so I can still do stuff like create an automation which sends a notification to my phone every time I've got a wheel spin. Also the default entity names are very user unfriendly so I had to translate them all into plain English!

As we've very much gone down the smart home route what will be a lot more useful is automatically switching things off when there's a savings session or if the price of lekky ramps up (we're on the tracker tariff).

I had been wondering about fixing but we'd then lose the variability of the tracker tariff and if your home can adjust it's demand based on variable tariff prices it seems to make more sense to stick, especially as there's no point in us having Agile.

All being well we should have a heat pump and MVHR system which can also be connected to Home Assistant soon, so we'll be living in the future!
