• Doily is very food motivated, but having lived in a field fending for herself for 6 months before we got her she knows the world is full of food and she’s very good at catching/finding it.

  • It’s just a birthday present, it shows they love you!
    Hoppy Biffday anyway 🎉

  • Ah, I see. She’ll be hardwired for life then… good luck!

  • Dog is now going in cage on own. Which is good.
What isn’t good is them waking up this am, going on their longer walk and spewing and shitting.

Also in this weird stage of not being into the kibble they’ve always eaten.

  • Had this the other day. Think there's some over feeding and we also noticed that one recent shit was 80% sticks and twigs. I think ours was just overfull.

He also slept all day after the vomiting so the last two nights have been 6+ hours of whining and howling as he's not tired/sleepy at the right times.

  • I’ve kind of learned not to worry about ours being sick. Both are disgusting and will eat shit and dead birds for fun.

Dogs are a scavenger breed at the end of the day. Their constitutions can handle (or reject) pretty much anything.

Our spaniel seems to ingest about a kilo of sand in France by fetching a ball on a beach last month. That all came up on the rug of an Airbnb over 36 hours.

  • Has anyone come across a dog tag where details aren’t immediately visible?
Thinking we’ll get a fair bit of attention and with socials etc would make it easier to stop at source

  • I've seen tags with qr codes rather than numbers etc..
Can't remember the source offhand but should come up with Google and may work for you?

  • Our dog has a tag on but good luck to anyone who tries to grab the collar of a strong willed terrier to read it.

He never strays more than about 10ft from me anyway.

  • Scavenging is getting on my tits though. While I accept it will happen it’s annoying because people throw the worst food out and fox shit.

  • Maybe try some of this training if you haven't already.

  • I think this is all good and needs to be picked up (again).

I find it difficult to compete against / watch out for perfect fried chicken / mmm ribs/ 7 day aged fox shit/ human shit/ raw chicken/ noodles someone is leaving out purposely that you might just stumble across every 5 minutes or so.

  • Having had two very full on weeks we are now flying solo. Delivery training has just finished. We went for lunch and Shadow was very good.
    Next few weeks are going to be tough as I juggle handling H and Shadow but we are on our way anyone who’s interested can follow us here;

  • followed!

  • We definitely don't have it nailed and I'm unlucky that since moving away from junkie central Neasden the amount of chicken bones, random bread and fox poo is not really a problem any more. That said what I found works is getting a really strong "leave it". Stop them enough times just before they do it and they'll end up checking with you before eating or rolling in the thing

  • Next command to work on. Thanks

  • And the next one when he retrieves things, which he will very soon (whether it's a ball, sock or half a rotting rabbit) is a word for 'kindly release it into my hand'. I use 'dead', which caused an unfortunate moment when after a game of ball with my lot, my granddaughter informed her teacher that she'd spent the weekend bringing back the dead.

  • We've been working on "drop it" though he is shit at fetch as he just looks at me like "what the fuck did you throw that over there for"

  • He will retrieve things, whether you want him to or not, it's best to start him on things you do want him to retrieve. A pair of vile stinky worn pair of rolled up socks is a good starting point.

'What's this then? (socks beneath nose, preferably not yours), 'fetch it'....

Ps: I would shorten that to 'drop', single word commands rule (unless you're my wife, who never uses fewer than 50).

  • Anyone making their own rope dog leads?
Given I think we’ll need to try several options to engage H with Shadow and me to still have control I thought it could be a good way to keep costs down…

  • Are crates much of a muchness or is it worth looking for anything in particular?

  • Is it for home and/or car? Worth considering the size. We picked up a Lintran car crate and on getting it home/testing it, it was just a touch too low despite the measurements not being much different to what we already have.

  • We ended up going bigger as our pup won't settle in the small one, though we now use that for the car full time.

Think whether you want doors on the side, end or both. Do you need it to pack easily for transport or will it be a permanent install. Make sure the door opening is low enough for your pup/dog to step over.

  • Yep and it was my favourite lead until my partner lost it :(

I got one from them afterwards.

  • We bought the alleged strongest crate available, Murphy chewed his way out in 3 nights at 12 weeks old. His grandfather (Murphy I) ate the side out of a 1" marine ply kennel.

For strong, inexpensive and most importantly non-stretchy leads, try Turner Richards. They're happy to make them to specific lengths if necessary.
