It seems that the more powerful ones need more ancillary equipment to run them, which increases the cost and space (and maintenance) required significantly. I’ve looked for a space but there’s nothing local to me, although I may be able to use college equipment in a few weeks.

The one at the makerspace I am part of is big, expensive. It's a 90kw laser. Will cut 3mm ply around 30mm per second. And cuts up to 12mm thick.
It's a commercial unit essentially.
I don't know much about domestic ones. I guess broadly it's power and size of bed that determines cost.
Maybe there's a space near you that you could join
