  • Don't usually go for posting my own ink online, but thought I'd cautiously share my most recent work done by Sini Manu of Studio Tatatau which we finished earlier in the summer after 2 years of regular sessions.

    I'm into super traditional blackwork (in appreciation of the artform of tattoo in itself) and this piece aims to be a respectful homage to the Samoan/Tongan Pe'a, one of the longest continuously practiced tattoo styles, pretty much unchanged for over 3000 years.

    It has some key differences to the 'real thing', as agreed on with the artist, who's Tongan himself, to remain respectful of the cultural practices the Pe'a resides within as I feel it's important to approach work like this with utmost respect for the culture it's borne from. It continues around the front in much the same way as the back, with a small triangle left around the junk. Took probably around 70hrs-ish all in.
