  • You probably need a freak occurrence for a boat like this to sink so close to land?

  • Hence, very low but not impossible.

  • You're right to point this out; as ever, 'newsworthiness' favours the novel, irregular, and individual. Stories about horrible boat sinkings have been posted here many times. On the same day that story appeared, spindrift posted this one:

    https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0vv717yvpeo?

It's a persistent complaint about the media that they should stubbornly post the same things over and over, if they recur all the time, until something is done about them, but that almost never happens. People move on quickly, memories are short.

  • On a plane, train or automobile.

  • Either freak weather or a huge mistake by the crew or an unexpected gear failure, e.g. broken mast or jammed winch. The boat had a professional crew and was managed by Camper and Nicholson, a very reputable firm. The sinking happened at 4.30 am. Maybe there will be a lawsuit suggesting that whoever was on duty was remiss in not checking the weather radar? I dunno. There's usually a lawsuit when a rich person has a fatal accident.

  • The Greggs ginger bread bandit has been sentenced

But this one gets me, https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cnvymmv5lr9o edl abuse and fights back.

  • Come now, why would the CIA want to take out a principled, vocal critic of the one-sided US-UK extradition arrangement (with deep pockets) just after he'd been busy panning it in the media?

    Oh...

  • Interesting to hear that his co-defendant was critically injured [edit: by a car driver] 2 days ago... https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/mike-lynchs-co-defendant-us-trial-critically-injured-uk-road-accident-source-2024-08-19/

  • It had a 75 metre aluminium mast, which was snapped by a waterspout. It was the 2nd tallest mast in the world and the tallest aluminium one.

  • Watched Triangle of Sadness a few months ago and imagine this is precisely how the boat and soles went down.

  • a severe airborne nut allergy

Wow, that sounds like another level.

    Squirrels are bastards.

  • my immediate thought re the sunk super yacht was perhaps the other vessel which was in the vicinity, and stated that they struggled to maintain position at one point, might have drifted into the yacht during the storm.

pure speculation and seems that wasn't the causal event as no collision has been report

Perhaps the snapped section of mast punctured the hull? That is not uncommon when boats are de-masted - some boats carry bolt cutters as emergency items so they can quickly get rid of a broken section of mast, which will still be tied to the boat by the wire cable mast stays...

  • Was he a fun manager?

  • "near the Be At One bar" 🤣

  • He's subsequently died.

  • All very Final Destination.

  • You’d think a billionaire could afford titanium smh.

Whatever happened must’ve been terrible. Survivors will no doubt share all soon enough.

  • Accidental renaissance.

  • A lot of very high powered people on that yacht. I guess that, and the accident involving Lynchh’s co-defendant at the weekend, is why a team of investigators/prosecutors hot-footed it over to Italy from the UK as soon as the sinking hit the news.

  • I can't wait for this episode of Montelbano

  • Such a crazy boat.
I was like, oh nice. Until I realised it's like 3 times bigger than I thought.

  • I do hope this Lynch man survives, even if his testicles are destroyed, hopefully his wife makes it too and can update people about what happened.
