You're right to point this out; as ever, 'newsworthiness' favours the novel, irregular, and individual. Stories about horrible boat sinkings have been posted here many times. On the same day that story appeared, spindrift posted this one:

It's a persistent complaint about the media that they should stubbornly post the same things over and over, if they recur all the time, until something is done about them, but that almost never happens. People move on quickly, memories are short.

Anyone else enjoying the outpouring of interest and liveblogs re: the (admittedly upsetting and shitty) superyacht sinking when the media are not normally quite so thorough with the coverage of other similar disasters....? Just like this one for example:
