My process is pretty much as you’d expect:Give the top ply a light rub down with some fine-ish sandpaper to give it a bit of tooth.
Carefully mask off the sides to just leave the top and sides of the top ply unmasked. Helps to kind of burnish the tape down a bit with a roller if you have one, or rub a wooden spoon along it if not. I feel like this step does give the finished thing that bit more of a ‘proper’ look to it. You’ll be glad you did it.
Prime - as you say, spray prime is a good shout for this.
I’ve used normal acrylic paints and also spray paint for the actual artwork. Also Indian ink. I don’t think I’ve used paint markers, but they’ll be fine too.
Once dry, I remove the masking tape and then give it a few coats of spray lacquer with drying time in between.
The more lacquer, the more hard wearing, but once a board is being slidded, it’s all just patina anyway!
