  • Holiday project for my kids is painting a deck each to hang in their room. Any tips on painting boards? Unlikely to be skated outside.
We’ll use spray primer for the base coat, then maybe their paint pens for detail? Clear lacquer spray to finish?

My process is pretty much as you’d expect:

Give the top ply a light rub down with some fine-ish sandpaper to give it a bit of tooth.

Carefully mask off the sides to just leave the top and sides of the top ply unmasked. Helps to kind of burnish the tape down a bit with a roller if you have one, or rub a wooden spoon along it if not. I feel like this step does give the finished thing that bit more of a ‘proper’ look to it. You’ll be glad you did it.

Prime - as you say, spray prime is a good shout for this.

I’ve used normal acrylic paints and also spray paint for the actual artwork. Also Indian ink. I don’t think I’ve used paint markers, but they’ll be fine too.

Once dry, I remove the masking tape and then give it a few coats of spray lacquer with drying time in between.
The more lacquer, the more hard wearing, but once a board is being slidded, it’s all just patina anyway!
