  • Belt drives can do one, but I won't be dissuaded from my Rohloff. I think any flange breakages people have suffered are due to substandard wheel building

Or being submersed in rivers, where they don't do too well

  • I measure mine in coffee shops…

  • It was the German couple flying from Argentina to Brazil to get a €700 part fitted in the continent’s only approved shop that put me off.

As a counter we also met many, many happy Rohloff-ers but when it goes wrong you’re pretty stuck.

  • 10 speed - it was certainly a bit fiddly and I had to fine tune every shift for the first weeks/month but now it’s so easy.

There was a pre-order but it was closed by the time I decided to get one. They should be in stock by the end of the month, not too much longer to wait.

I wanted a Crust Evasion for ages but getting one over here is silly money, the Stooge is different enough that I won’t forever be annoyed I compromised and has a charm of its own. An All City Gorilla Monsoon was the other option but the idea of a QBP rip of the Evasion wasn’t sparking joy.

  • Tbf, my fondness for Rohloff and now Pinion has nothing to do with round the world touring as it's not an interest of mine, whereas being able to ride in the UK's famous SFAB without a stray twig mashing up my derailleur hanger is a massive plus for me :-)

I honestly really struggle with what might work for me thousands of miles from home and would probably decide to do a walking tour instead

  • Singlespeed solves that problem AND ensures there'll be plenty of walking...

  • 10 year younger me is now crying

  • gripshift

I've not heard that euphemism for wanking before. I will try and adopt it.

  • So long as you're on a bike I don't care. You're all doing god's* work!

*there is no god, there's just hippy.

  • Di2, all the gears and don't ride over shitting sticks.

  • don't ride over shitting sticks

You do know what forests are made of, right?

  • Trees, and there is nothing else but trees, not that I can see anyway.

  • Absolutely nothing at all

  • I've got the Kona Sutra 2021, before they turned to tapered headtube and general uglyness. It fits 2.2 tyres easily and steel forks with loads of mounts, its pretty similar to the Faran. The only weirdness I realised after buying is the 73mm BB, so took a while to sort a 2x setup, and Im using a derailleur hanger extender that makes the back wheel annoying to get out, its a bit of a tank but otherwise perfect for me. Just did a 215 mile east devon way and black down hills bike packing route on it.

  • If the rambler is as fun as my scrambler you won't be disappointed.

  • Got the dynamo installed on the Surly. Just need a seatpost now and I might go for my first ride since crashing in June. "It's just like riding a bike" they said.

The Crux is rideable but I'm too scared to touch it yet.

  • What model Surly?

  • I quite like the look of the Dirt Tracker, but I’ll have drum brakes with that please.

  • Drum brakes are cool, but I guess there is something that's too niche, even for stooge.

  • Fucking guard/inspector wouldn’t let me on the train this morning so instead of primo grav grav I had to ride the kilpatrick hills’ finest sfab.

There was also some WHW and John Muir way grav which was pretty good though.

In other news, I took the bouncy, twisty dropper post off and put a standard solid post on and now I’m butthurt.

Have bought a Thudbuster off eBay, hope it arrives soon!

  • Second is premium UK grav well third

  • TBF, bike handled it like a champ, good grip from the fairly low treaded tyres, guards didn't clog up with the SFAB.

  • This is true, but I think you could mod the disc mount for the torque arm. The boost spacing may be a bigger issue:)

  • It's an orange one.
