I'm sure this has been said over and over on here but what is it with car drivers and parking literally where they please these days? Was in a cafe getting lunch earlier and two separate Merc divers pulled up outside on double yellows walked in and sat down for lunch!? This was a very busy road and right at the beginning of the cycle lane ... it's endemic in Brighton at the moment, the worst is high sided vans parking on DY junctions totally obscuring oncoming traffic.

The roads to the west of Heathrow, (originally to the west of the sewage works that had to be demolished to make space for T5), were improved in the days before the M25 was even a glimmer in the Dept. of Transport's eyes. Nowadays they are barely maintained.
You will have seen the step 'Fix me' approaching the roundabout at the south west corner of LHR, where the underlying concrete slabs have moved.
Some of the worst failed transverse joints have recently been (over)filled meaning the best way to cross them is tight to the kerb.

Used to work at Stockley Park. 12+ years back, the west side of Heathrow was dogshit... too busy, cars too fast, dangerous in general. I used to go the east side of the ring road and then down towards Hayes as it seemed a bit more controlled.

Apart from the slight kink on your map at Stanwell where I went straight on, that is pretty much the route I took. The road network over that way is as @mespilus described. There’s not really much out there except depots and support industries for Heathrow, probably why there are no small roads.

Yeah, I wouldn't choose to ride out there but I did often go training straight out the A4 to Bristol and back so had to deal with going through Sloth and past Heathrow. But I'm an idiot. Don't do what I did.

I’ve only done that bit of the A4 by bike once when I went right through to the east end. I had a funeral to get to in Tower Hamlets and there was a train strike on. Early-ish on a Sunday morning and it wasn’t too bad until a couple of miles before Hammersmith tbh, but I wouldn’t do it at any busy time. I came back the slightly longer way through Richmond and Twickenham because the roads are way nicer.

I was head down on the TT bike and basically numb to 70mph close passes so I tended to ride the busier roads with more lanes or bigger shoulders rather than deal with "lanes" or anything where a cunt could swing a door out in my path.
